The San Francisco Office of Protocol hosts visiting dignitaries in San Francisco, manages the cities international affairs, engages the consulates in San Francisco, and hosts civic events.[1] The office is under the Mayor of San Francisco.
History
[edit]Founded in 1951, the San Francisco Office of Protocol was the first municipal protocol office in the United States. It was established under Mayor Elmer E. Robinson to meet the city’s growing ceremonial and diplomatic needs in a post-World War II world.[2]
The office's origins trace back to the historic signing of the United Nations Charter in 1945, hosted in San Francisco.[3] The event brought representatives from 50 nations to the city.
Chief of Protocol
[edit]The Chief of Protocol of the City and County of San Francisco leads the office. Cyril Magnin served as the first chief of protocol. Charlotte Schultz served as Chief of Protocol for over five decades. Richard Goldman served as Chief under Mayor Frank Jordan. Following the passing of Charlotte Schultz, Maryam Muduruglu took over the position. Penny Coulter is the current Chief of Protocol.
