Sabah Zita Benson (born June 9, 1975) is a Ghanaian lawyer, diplomat, entrepreneur, and politician. She is a former Minister of Information and Minister of Tourism, and has served as Ghana’s Ambassador to the Czech Republic with concurrent accreditation to Slovakia, Macedonia, Hungary, and Romania. She is also known for her work in legal practice, public service, and private business ventures, particularly in the hospitality and pharmaceutical industries.
Early life and education
[edit]Zita Benson studied law and English at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. She later completed her Bachelor of Laws (LLB) at the University of Ghana, and was called to the Ghana Bar after attending the Ghana School of Law. She also holds a Master of Laws (LL.M) in Oil and Gas from the University of Ghana School of Law.
Career
[edit]Legal and private sector
[edit]Zita Benson began her career in the legal field, working as a barrister and legal consultant in Accra. Her practice focused on corporate and family law. Outside the legal profession, she has also been active in entrepreneurship. She founded a catering and event company in Accra, and later launched ZBAR, a high-end restaurant and lounge at the World Trade Center, Accra.
In the United States, she established Belmont Pharmacy in Las Vegas, Nevada, under the umbrella of Benzene Khemikals LLC. The pharmacy offers retail and medical services to the local community.
Political and diplomatic service
[edit]In 2009, Benson was appointed Ghana’s Minister of Information, where she led national media and public communication campaigns. She coordinated communication efforts during Barack Obama’s historic visit to Ghana that same year.
She later served as Minister of Tourism, where she oversaw the development of Ghana's tourism infrastructure, including the establishment of the Accra Visitors Center, and opened Ghana Tourism Authority offices in New York and London.
In 2014, she was appointed as Ghana’s Ambassador to the Czech Republic, with accreditation to Slovakia, Hungary, Macedonia, and Romania. During her tenure, she helped facilitate defense cooperation, student scholarships to Hungary, and signed agreements including visa waivers for diplomatic passport holders.
Honors and recognition
[edit]Zita Benson has received numerous awards and honors throughout her career. Notably, she was named one of the *Forty Under 40* by TNJ Magazine in New York in 2010. She was also honored by the West Africa Nobles Forum for her ethical leadership, and by the Ghana Association of Las Vegas for her community involvement.
Political involvement
[edit]A dedicated member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Benson stood as a parliamentary candidate for the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency in 2008. She has since served on multiple campaign and transition committees, including as co-founder of the “Finishing Hard” campaign team and a member of NDC USA’s fundraising team.
