Rita Mallia
[edit]- Rita Mallia is an Australian trade unionist and lawyer. She is known for her role as the President of New South Wales (NSW) branch of the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU). In 2010, she became the first woman to be elected president of the union's NSW branch.
Early life and education
[edit]Rita was born to Maltese immigrants who relocated to Australia in the 1960s. She graduated from Sydney Law School and was subsequently admitted as a solicitor.[1]
Career

[edit]Rita began her career with the CFMEU in 1996 as an industrial officer.
In 2010, she was elected president of the NSW branch of the union’s Construction and General Division.[2]She was also on the NSW Labor Partys NSW admin committee
Rita held directorships at the industry superannuation fund United Super (Cbus) and the Australian Construction Industry Redundancy Trust. She was also previously a vice-president of Unions NSW.[3]
Later activities
[edit]After her departure from the CFMEU, Rita joined Electrogroup, an organization focused on apprenticeship training in the electrical industry across NSW and the Australian Capital Territory.[4] She also participated in the 2025 May Day rally in Sydney, which focused on workers’ rights, housing, and climate action.[5]
