Ray Stoeve (they/them) is a trans* young adult author based in the Pacific Northwest. Their novels include Between Perfect and Real (2022), Arden Grey (2022), and The Summer Love Strategy (2024). Stoeve is also known for creating the YA/MG Trans and Nonbinary Voices Masterlist, a database of MG and YA books about trans characters, by trans authors.
Books
[edit]- Between Perfect and Real - Published in 2022, Ray Stoeve's debut novel follows trans boy, Dean Foster, as he takes on the role of Romeo in his high school's production of Romeo and Juliet. The issue? Everyone, including his girlfriend, thinks he's a lesbian. Dean's budding trans identity becomes too difficult to hide as he takes on this "untraditional" casting, feeling at home in the male role. But, what would happen if he came out as a trans guy? Would his girlfriend still want to be with him? Would his friends and family be supportive? You can find more information on this novel here.
- Arden Grey - Published in 2022, shortly after their debut, Stoeve's second novel follows a sixteen-year-old film photographer, Arden Grey, as she struggles with her sexuality, crumbling best-friendship, and strained relationship with her mom. Arden knows that she likes girls romantically, but she's not so sure about sexual attraction. Is she asexual? Deep in her journey of self-discovery, her best friend, Jamie, is swept away by his new girlfriend who steals all of his time. Feeling more alone than ever, Arden is left to navigate her rocky home life and blossoming crush on an allosexual girl. You can find more information on this novel here.
- The Summer Love Strategy - Published in 2024, Stoeve's third novel follows Hayley and her best friend Talia as they search for romcom-style summer love. Together, they push themselves into situations straight out of romance movies in an attempt to score a passionate summer fling. But, can they handle the rising demands of their summer love strategy? You can find more information on this novel here.
- Worst-Case Scenario - Set to be released in January 2026, Stoeve's fourth novel is an "enemies-to-lovers romance about nemeses who are forced to share their school's Queer Alliance presidency following a tie in the election" (Stoeve). You can find more information on this novel here.
YA/MG Trans and Nonbinary Voices Masterlist
[edit]The YA/MG Trans and Nonbinary Voices Masterlist is a database of middle grade and young adult fiction that is written by trans* authors and features trans* characters. Stoeve was inspired to create this masterlist after a friend asked them for a recommendation of "young adult trans ownvoices fiction" and they could only think of one novel (Stoeve). This built curiosity for Stoeve---were there other novels in this genre out there? They also wondered: how were these stories being published (traditionally, self-published, etc.)?
So, Stoeve created the YA/MG Trans and Nonbinary Voices Masterlist, which now serves as a phenomenal publicly accessible resource for writers and readers alike. You can find more information on the masterlist and a direct link to the database here.
Time Capsule Newsletter
[edit]Once a month, Stoeve sends out a newsletter to subscribers' emails. Each newsletter contains "a short essay highlighting one book from [their] YA/MG Trans & Nonbinary Voices Masterlist, and its place in queer & trans YA history" (Stoeve). These essays are important because they showcase a piece of trans literature, written by a trans author, that otherwise might go unnoticed or underappreciated. These essays also explore the books' significance to trans YA literature as a whole, explaining how the representation made a difference, both in the publishing industry and the world at large. You can subscribe to the Time Capsule newsletter, and read archived issues, here.
