Punjabi Samvad is a non-governmental organization (NGO) based in Amritsar, Punjab, India, committed to addressing social injustices and empowering marginalized communities through education, vocational training, and cultural initiatives.

History

Founded in 2004 by Amit Bawa and Jyoti Bawa, Punjabi Samvad emerged in response to witnessing a tragic gender-based crime in Punjab. The organization's inaugural initiative was the play Khooh Bolda Hai ("The Well Speaks"), which highlighted the issue of female foeticide and became a cornerstone of their mission .

After Amit Bawa's passing in 2014 due to a brain tumor, Jyoti Bawa assumed the role of Chairperson. Under her leadership, the NGO expanded its reach across various sectors, including education, health, and environmental sustainability, while staying true to its foundational vision .

  • Cultural Programs: Utilizing theatre and art to spread social messages, notably through the play Khooh Bolda Hai, performed over 100 times .
  • Health Initiatives: Organizing health-related informative sessions in collaboration with governmental bodies, such as the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, focusing on nutrition and wellness .
  • Drug Awareness Campaigns: Launching documentaries like Tirhayi Umar to raise awareness about drug addiction and initiating vocational training programs to empower affected individuals .

Recognition

In April 2024, Punjabi Samvad celebrated its 15th anniversary at Punjab Natshala in Amritsar. The event featured the presentation of the 'Inspirational Icon Award 2024' to eight exceptional women for their remarkable contributions to society .

Leadership

Jyoti Bawa, a philanthropist, writer, and social activist, currently serves as the President of Punjabi Samvad. She has been recognized as a TEDx speaker and was honored with the "Real Life Hero" award presented by the United Nations.
