Prakash Kumar Paudel is a conservation biologist, academic researcher, and an author, currently based in Kathmandu, Nepal. He is the founding president of Nepal Chapter of the Society for Conservation Biology[1] as well as Kathmandu Institute of Applied Sciences.[2] Paudel formerly served as Senior Scientific Officer at the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST). He is an author of  Conservation Biology: A Primer for Nepal[3],  a book widely adopted as a reference and textbook in graduate and undergraduate studies in Nepal.[4]

Early life and education

Paudel was born in Bardiya, a district in the far western region of Nepal, where he completed his secondary education. He later pursued higher education in Kathmandu, subsequently earning a Master of Science in Environmental Management from Pokhara University, Nepal. He completed his PhD in Ecosystem Biology at the University of South Bohemia in the Czech Republic, specializing in wildlife distribution and conservation in a human-dominated landscape.

Career

Paudel began his career as a secondary school teacher in Kathmandu after completing Intermediate in Science. Over time, he progressed professionally to lead numerous development projects, with a particular focus on environmental conservation, ecology, and community development. He possesses a wide range of experience from international and regional to national levels.

Research

From October 2011 to May 2012, Paudel served as a Research Associate at the Department of Biodiversity Research Center, Global Change Research Center, Czech Academy of Sciences in Brno, Czech Republic. He then worked as a Scientist specializing in conservation biology at the same institution from May to December 2012.

In 2013, he relocated to his home country Nepal and joined the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) as a Research Fellow in March 2014. He was later promoted to Senior Scientific Officer in February 2015, a position he held until March 2017. In March 2017, Paudel assumed the role of Executive Director and Scientist at the Center for Conservation Biology under the Kathmandu Institute of Applied Sciences,[5] where he continued working until December 2023. Currently, Paudel is the Director at Conservation Nepal[6] and Chairman at the Society for Conservation Biology Nepal.[7]
