Piergiuseppe Morone (born May 10, 1976) is an Italian economist and Full Professor of Economic Policy[1] at UnitelmaSapienza University of Rome,[2] best known for his work on green innovation, sustainability transitions, and the circular bioeconomy. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of Societal Impacts (Elsevier)[3][4]and Vice-Chair of the Scientific Committee of the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU).[5]
He maintains active international academic partnerships as an Associate Fellow at the Behavioural Environmental Economics Team[6] at University College London (UCL) and as a Research Fellow at the Corvinus Institute for Advanced Studies[7] at Corvinus University in Budapest, Hungary.
Early Career and Education
[edit]Piergiuseppe Morone earned his Ph.D. from the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) at the University of Sussex in 2003, where he studied under economist Nick von Tunzelmann.[8] He also holds a Master of Art degree in development economics from the University of Sussex. He graduated (cum laude) in economics in 1998 from the University of Bari. Since his early career steps, his Italian mentor has been Cesare Imbriani.
Academic Career
[edit]Morone began his academic career as a researcher at the University of Rome "La Sapienza" and later held positions at the University of Naples "L'Orientale" and the University of Foggia. In 2015, he was appointed Full Professor of Economic Policy at UnitelmaSapienza University of Rome, where he also serves as director of the School of Sustainability Studies and Circular Economy (SUSTAIN) and coordinates the Bioeconomy in Transition Research Group (BiT-RG).[9]
Currently he is Vice-Rector for Research at UnitelmaSapienza University of Rome.[10]
His teaching spans innovation economics, economic policy, and sustainability, with appointments at institutions including LUISS Guido Carli[11] and Sapienza University of Rome.[12]
Research and Publications
[edit]Professor Morone's research sits at the intersection of innovation economics and environmental sustainability. He has authored over 130 peer-reviewed articles and several books, including:

His work explores themes such as circular economy models, sustainability assessment tools, and policy frameworks for green innovation. His contributions to research include leading major EU-funded projects such as STAR-ProBio and SUSTRACK, and his work has been cited over 4,000 times, with an H-index of 39.
Roles in Science and Policy
[edit]Piergiuseppe Morone has played significant roles in both scientific governance and public policy. He served as an economic advisor to the Italian Minister of the Environment, Sergio Costa, from 2019 until 2021 and has been a key member in various European Commission expert groups and national committees on sustainability, bioeconomy, and environmental transition.
In addition to his role as Vice-Chair of the CBE JU Scientific Committee, he has been active in EU-funded projects including Horizon Europe, LIFE, and Erasmus+. He has also served on the advisory boards of projects such as BIOBRIDGES and ROBIN, and contributed to SAPEA's evidence report on "A Sustainable Food System for the EU" for the European Commission.[15]
He contributes regularly to the Italian debate on sustainability policies authoring articles for the online magazine Formiche.net
Editorial and Scientific Contributions
[edit]Morone is a prominent figure in academic publishing in the fields of sustainability and innovation. Besides his role at Societal Impacts, he is Associate Editor of Cleaner and Circular Bioeconomy[16] and serves on the editorial boards of prestigious journals such as Current Opinion in Green and Sustainable Chemistry[17] and Open Agriculture. He frequently acts as Guest Editor for special issues in highly impacted international journals like the Journal of Cleaner Production.[18]
Recognition
[edit]He is featured in the Stanford/Elsevier World Top 2% Scientist Ranking[19][20] and has been invited to give talks by several institutions including University College London, SPRU – University of Sussex, and Universidad de Chile. He is regularly invited to give keynote speeches at international conferences including the Renewable Resources and Biorefineries in York, UK; the Latin American Congress in Conceptión, Chile; the International Postgraduate Research Conference (IPRC) University of Kelaniya in Kelaniya, Sri Lanka. His research projects and leadership roles have received recognition by the European Commission, which selected the STAR-ProBio project as a "success story."

Personal Life
[edit]Piergiuseppe Morone is Italian by nationality and currently resides in Rome, where he continues his academic, research, and advisory work at UnitelmaSapienza University.
He is married with Yael and has a son (Gianni) and a daughter (Gaia).
