Phonixthecool (born Lunga Khumalo) is a South African rapper, songwriter, and producer from Durban. He gained international recognition as the first African artist signed to the iconic U.S. label Death Row Records.

Raised in Durban, South Africa, Khumalo developed a unique musical style that blends his African heritage with global hip-hop influences. His distinctive sound caught the attention of industry veterans, leading to significant collaborations.

Breakthrough and international recognition

In December 2021, Phonixthecool featured on Snoop Dogg's Algorithm (Global Edition) album, contributing to the remix of "No Smut On My Name" alongside Battle Loco and Kokane.[1]

In September 2023, Snoop Dogg announced Phonixthecool's signing to Death Row Records, marking the label's first African signing in its 32-year history. This move also introduced the launch of Death Row Africa, aiming to spotlight African talent.[2]

Musical style
