Paulo Ruiz Picasso (4 February 1921 – 5 June 1975), also known as Paul Picasso, was the eldest son of the Spanish painter, designer and sculptor Pablo Picasso and Russian-Ukrainian dancer Olga Khokhlova.

Biography

[edit]

Family

[edit]

Pablo Picasso married his first wife Olga Khokhlova in 1918, at the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Paris, France[1],[2]. Paulo was born in 1921, and because Pablo's other 3 children were born out of wedlock and various other reasons, Paulo was the only child born to him by marriage, and thus was Pablo's only legally recognized heir upon his death. For more information, see Pablo Picasso's personal life.

Childhood

[edit]

Paulo Picasso was merely 2 years of age when he started becoming featured in his father's paintings. These were all painted in years 1923-1925, when Pablo still had a good relationship with Paulo's mother Olga, as she is also featured in various drawings and paintings in the early years of their marriage.

These are the paintings known to have featured Paulo, all as oil on canvas:

This period of relative family tranquility ended when Picasso met Marie-Thérèse Walter in 1927, and began an affair with her. According to multiple sources, Olga discovered Pablo's affair with Walter in 1935; what's worse, Walter was pregnant. Olga demanded a divorce, however, the prenuptial agreement they signed when they married stipulated she would receive half of everything Pablo owned, including his artwork. Pablo of course refused to part with any of his artwork, so divorce proceedings ended, and Olga fled to South of France along with son Paulo, aged 14 at the time. Pablo and Olga were legally married until Olga's death in 1955 [8],[9].

Active life

[edit]

Paulo Picasso later became Pablo's chauffeur. Poorly paid for this service, his father paid him only a meager pension and refused to provide any financial assistance to his mother, Olga, who gradually sank into poverty (who died on February 11, 1955 ). The relationship between the painter and his son gradually deteriorated. Pablo openly considered Paulo an "imbecile" and regularly humiliated him[10]. One day, he told him: "You are a bourgeois anarchist and an incompetent." Having become the painter's scapegoat, Paulo Picasso was not allowed to enter his father's villa in Cannes or even to meet him when he was working. Forced to live a precarious life, he suffered from alcoholism and was unable to free himself from the influence of Pablo Picasso, who proved to be his only source of income[11].

Adulthood

[edit]

Paulo Picasso married Émilienne Lotte [fr],[12]. They separated in 1951, after the birth of two children:

He remarried for the second time to Christiane, known as Christine Pauplin, whom he met in 1955[13],[14],  who gave him a third child:

End of life

[edit]

Pablo Picasso died on April 8, 1973, at the age of 91. As the painter's only legitimate son, Paulo was entitled to a certain share of the inheritance which amply allowed him to improve his lifestyle[15]. On July 12, 1973 , however, he lost his eldest son, Pablito Picasso [fr], who died after swallowing bleach[16], enduring a long agony[17].

Suffering from liver cancer, Paulo Picasso died just two years after on 5 June 1975, at the age of 54. He is buried in the Montparnasse Cemetery (Division 16) in Paris.
