Paulina Avila is a lens-based artist originally from Mexico City, currently residing in New York City.[citation needed] She graduated with honors from Parsons School of Design in 2024, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Photography with a specialization in Film Production.[citation needed]
Career
[edit]Avila's artistic practice is informed by her interest in cinema and visual storytelling. Her work often explores themes of nostalgia, belonging, and dreams, with a particular focus on the role of women in family dynamics and political-social spheres. Additionally, her connection to Mexico is a central element in her work, serving both as context and source of inspiration.[citation needed]
Avila’s academic training at Parsons School of Design, an institution renowned for producing influential artists and designers such as Tom Ford and Bill Blass, played a significant role in shaping her artistic vision. During her studies, she was mentored by Keisha Scarville, an American photographer and visual artist, and Mimi Wong, a writer and professor specializing in art, culture, and literature.[citation needed] Avila’s exposure to their expertise guided her exploration of themes such as memory, belonging, and identity, which are central to her work.[1]
Artistic Practice and Projects
[edit]Avila’s art combines elements of portraiture, conceptual photography, and experimental video to create intimate narratives that resonate with broader collective experiences. She often employs a monochromatic aesthetic, characterized by dark tones and careful attention to composition and detail. Her work is recognized by Mexican media for its emotional depth and ability to address complex personal and collective histories.[2]
Among her notable projects are “Entre Dos” and “La Memoria de las Paredes”, both of which integrate photography, collage, and video in a multidisciplinary approach. “Entre Dos” utilizes stop-motion video to explore themes of roots and nostalgia, using nature as a metaphor within a narrative structure divided into acts. “La Memoria de las Paredes” juxtaposes archival materials with contemporary photographs, reconstructing fragments of family histories across time and space.[3]
