Pakistan–Turkey–Azerbaijan Alliance
[edit]The term Pakistan–Turkey–Azerbaijan alliance is applied to the trilateral association of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the Republic of Turkey, and the Republic of Azerbaijan. The informal strategic relationship has expanded considerably in recent years on the grounds of mutual historical linkages, religious and cultural affinities, and convergent political and military interests. While not a treaty-based alliance, the association between the three nations has developed on multiple diplomatic, defense, cultural, and economic fronts.
Historical Background
[edit]The roots of this partnership date back to the early 20th century. Pakistan and Turkey have had close bilateral ties since Pakistan gained independence in 1947. Likewise, Pakistan was one of the first nations to recognize Azerbaijan's independence when the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991. Turkey, being a Turkic state, shares strong ethnic and linguistic links with Azerbaijan. The three nations have, throughout the years, remained each other's strong allies in international circles on matters like Kashmir, Cyprus, and Nagorno-Karabakh.
Trilateral Cooperation
[edit]A major achievement in institutionalizing their collaboration came on **13 January 2021**, when the foreign ministers of Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Pakistan conducted the **First Trilateral Meeting** in Islamabad. In a triple declaration, the three nations reiterated their pledge for sovereignty and territorial integrity, while vowing to enhance cooperation among them in political, economic, security, science, and cultural fields.
At the meeting, all countries extended strong solidarity to each other's major national issues:
- Pakistan reaffirmed solidarity with Azerbaijan in its stance on the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh.
- Turkey again expressed solidarity with Pakistan in its stand on the Kashmir issue.
- Azerbaijan extended solidarity with Turkey on the issue of Cyprus.
Military and Defense Ties
[edit]The partnership is also reinforced by increasing defense cooperation. The three nations hold joint military exercises, exchange defense technology, and engage in joint security talks. A good example is the **"Three Brothers-2021" joint military exercise**, which was conducted in Baku, Azerbaijan. The exercise sought to promote interoperability, counterterrorism capabilities, and coordination between the armies of the three nations.
Turkey and Pakistan have also entered various defense deals, such as the sale of Turkish T129 ATAK helicopters and MILGEM-class warships to Pakistan. Azerbaijan has also been interested in expanding defense industry collaboration with the two nations, especially in drone technology and border security systems.
Economic and Cultural Dimensions
[edit]Aside from military and diplomacy, the partnership is being solidified through economic cooperation and cultural exchange. The nations have been negotiating trilateral trade and regional infrastructure development. Turkish soap operas, especially *Diriliş: Ertuğrul*, have become extremely popular in Pakistan and Azerbaijan, enhancing cultural affinity.
Language, Islamic identity, and respect for one another have also intensified popular support for this alliance. The leaders of all three countries often emphasize their relations as a "brotherhood" based on common values, trust, and regional harmony.
Strategic Importance
[edit]In an evolving global geopolitical landscape, this trilateral arrangement acts as a counter to regional alliances and rivalries. It provides reciprocal diplomatic backing and is a platform for cooperative endeavors in South Asia, Central Asia, and the Middle East.
