History

The PMG gas mask ( Russian: Противогаз Малогабаритный , romanized: Protivogaz Malogabaritnyya) is a Soviet single-filter gas mask. It was first adopted by the Soviet Army in 1963, Although it was originally intended for the Soviet Navy. It was the first Soviet gas mask with a smaller, more modern filter (before its creation, gas masks were typically equipped only with large-sized filters , which would be attached to the gas mask via a hose. One example of these large filters are the Soviet coffee can filters)

Construction and design

To simplify easy use of scopes on firearms and other optical devices, the lenses are forward facing and relatively flat when being worn. These lens types are occasionally referred to as optical lenses. There is a neck strap on the neck for a more secure fixation of the mask on the head. On the top of the head, there are two holes where rubber has been removed. This was done to ensure the wearer keeps cool while wearing the mask. Additionally, these ventilation holes can be used as a carry handle when not being worn, this aids in efficient, convenient and easy transport by soldiers. The removal of this rubber also cuts costs and saves rubber, allowing more gas masks to be created with the cut out rubber. In the centre of the mask, there is a voice diaphragm. The top of the diaphragm can be unscrewed to reveal the piece of hard plastic which transmits the voice. This is there to make it possible for easy replacements in a case of the plastic being punctured, compromising both the seal of the mask and the wearer in a toxic or possibly an NBC environment.

Use today

Two people at the 2015 montreal Comicon cosplaying combine metro cops from the game Half-Life 2. The resemblance with the PMG can be seen easily.

Pop culture

In modern pop culture, the PMG can be sometimes be seen used in games or as inspiration for military soldiers in game. One of the most notable of this is the combine soldier from the Half-Life game series. The mask is very similar to the PMG, and can often be seen being worn by cosplayers of half life soldiers

Another, less notable example of the PMG in pop culture is the Gulag soldier from Call of Duty Warzone. His mask is exactly the same as a PMG, the only difference is 2 stripes upon the cheeks.

Military use

Although the PMG is no longer used by most modern and advanced militaries, it is still occasionally used for training
