PJ Losey
[edit]Patrick James "PJ" Losey (born July 12, 1983) is an American motorsports engineer, strategist, and technology specialist known for his work across racing disciplines including World Challenge, IMSA, SRO, and IndyCar. His experience spans from AMA Flat Track support and sim racing league management to professional race strategy, technical builds, and high-stakes engineering projects such as proton therapy accelerators. He is currently a Trackside Support Engineer with Honda Racing Corporation in the NTT IndyCar Series. PJ is also the founder of Losey.co, a tech, racing, and consulting brand built on 20+ years of cross-disciplinary experience.
Early Life and Education
[edit]PJ Losey was born in Marathon, Florida, and raised in Monmouth, Illinois. He was exposed to motorsports early through trail riding and flat track on family land, and supported a friend’s rise through AMA Flat Track to Expert status. He held his first jobs at McDonald’s and Painter’s Farm Equipment, learning management, scheduling, and operational skills as a teenager.
PJ attended Hamilton Technical College from 2002 to 2004 for electronics engineering but left before graduating to pursue hands-on opportunities. During college, he worked at Best Buy installing mobile audio systems, remote starts, keyless entry, and alarms.
Career
[edit]Automotive & Dealership Roles (2001–2011)
[edit]PJ worked at IMI MCR, his father's vending machine equipment company, moving from assembly to shipping manager. He then joined Lakis Ford Dodge as a car detailer and rose through every department—eventually managing the rental car division, overseeing inventory, and handling finance. He earned a Business Management/Finance certification during this period.
Sim Racing & RP Motorsports (2010–2012)
[edit]Losey ran iRacers Resource and the ISRA League, one of iRacing’s top-tier sim racing leagues. His exposure there led racer Jim Daniels to invite him to join RP Motorsports, run by Ron and Paula Baker, in World Challenge competition. Mentored by Buddy Fey, PJ handled video systems, data logging, and fuel calculations for the team’s Mustang entries.
Davidson Racing & Thunderhill Victory (2012–2019)
[edit]In 2012, PJ relocated to Carson City, Nevada to join Davidson Racing, where he served as a Team Manager and Electronics Engineer. His responsibilities spanned logistics, wiring harness builds, PDM programming, IT systems, and trackside strategy. Davidson fielded two major builds:
- The Eagle, a scratch-built center-drive car based on the SLC platform.
- The Norma M20, powered by a naturally aspirated BMW 3.0L and a 6-speed SADEV gearbox.
In 2014, the team won the 25 Hours of Thunderhill overall. A 10-minute documentary by Yahoo Motorsports—directed and driven by Alex Lloyd—featured the effort.[1]
PJ continued to manage Davidson’s transition into collector car curation, acquiring and maintaining cars such as a McLaren P1, LaFerrari, Porsche 918, DeLorean, and a one-of-a-kind 1953 Chevrolet Corvette, the only GM-backed NASCAR entry from that year.
Cameron Racing, SRO Championship & Rearden Racing (2017–2022)
[edit]While still involved with Davidson, PJ worked as a fly-in engineer for Cameron Racing, primarily in World Challenge and IMSA. He supported drivers like Greg Liefooghe, Sean Quinlan, and Ari Balhough, managing live telemetry, IT, and race strategy. In 2019, Cameron Racing won the SRO World Challenge Championship with PJ contributing key fuel calculations and strategy work.
He also worked with Rearden Racing as a Car Chief and engineer on various programs, including the #1910 GT3 Lamborghini, and earlier in the Skullcandy Nissan GT Academy series.
Tech Career & Engineering Work (2020–2024)
[edit]When COVID halted much of the racing scene, PJ moved into tech-focused roles. He joined JS Electronics, followed by a position at Getz Fire, where he installed and programmed complex commercial fire protection systems—including systems for State Farm HQ and other major buildings.
In 2022, PJ was recruited by Varian Medical Systems, a Siemens Healthineers company, to build and commission a Proton Therapy Accelerator at OSF Peoria. He led a team of 10–15 electricians, performed system wiring and terminations, installed servers, firewalls, and OS-level configs, and calibrated treatment machinery. He became the first technician to treat a patient at the new cancer center and worked closely with the center's director to maintain and run the system.
Honda Racing Corporation – IndyCar (2024–Present)
[edit]While finishing a night shift at OSF, PJ received a recruiting call from Honda. In May 2024, he joined Honda Racing Corporation as a Trackside Support Engineer, beginning his tenure at the Indy 500, which Honda won that year. His role includes:
- Collaborating with engineers and mechanics to tune engine performance
- Live data monitoring and real-time support during race weekends
- Troubleshooting telemetry and setup issues
- Working across the IndyCar paddock with teams running Honda powerplants
