Oscar Wylee is an Australian eyewear brand that offers in-house designed optical glasses and sunglasses alongside eye health services.[1] Oscar Wylee was first established as an e-commerce company in 2012. In 2013, the company opened its first-ever showroom in Sydney, Australia marking Oscar Wylee’s first time providing optometrist services on-site. Oscar Wylee went on to open their first store in Chatswood located in Sydney which was followed by additional stores in several locations across Australia, New Zealand and Canada.[2]

History

Oscar Wylee was co-founded by John Teoh and Michael Lim. [3] John Teoh is one of the sons of Australian businessman David Teoh, the founder of TPG Telecom and the 31st richest person in Australia.[4] Teoh and Lim met in their first year of University studying a double degree in Commerce and Law. In their final semester, they dropped out of University to pursue online retail.[5]

The name of the company comes from a trip Teoh and Lim took around Asia where they met a Western expat named Oscar Wylee, however the name was spelt differently.[6]

Controversy

In 2020, the ACCC instituted legal proceedings against Oscar Wylee, and was ordered by the Federal Court to pay $3.5 million in penalties for misleading or deceptive conduct and making false or misleading representations about its charitable donations.[7] This penalty was in regard to their previous claims that for each pair of glasses purchased Oscar Wylee would donate another pair of glasses to someone in need, as well as a misleading affiliation with Rose Charities, a charity aiming to build sustainable eye care programs in Cambodia.[8]

Business strategy

Oscar Wylee solely sells eyewear designed in-house, with customisable lens options. [9] The company runs a Joint Venture Partnership program wherein business leaders can join Oscar Wylee as part owners of their stores. There are currently over 50 stores run by joint venture partners. [10]The OW Optometry Graduate Program is a business implementation wherein Oscar Wylee works with recently graduated optometrists in store, providing training in customer experience, clinical distinction and store operations, alongside making regular appearances at University Open Days.[11]Oscar Wylee employs various advertising avenues such as social media and posters on public transportation showcasing their most popular frames on various models.

In 2025, on Earth Day, Oscar Wylee announced the expansion of its eco-friendly range with the addition of 139 Bio Acetate frames.[12]

Oscar Wylee stores in Australia are located in all six states and two territories, amounting to around 120 stores in the country. Oscar Wylee stores in Australia provides bulk-billed eye tests conducted by in-store optometrists to their customers with no gap or out-of-pocket expenses for those with a Medicare card.[13]Medicare refers to the universal health insurance scheme used in Australia that provides individuals with access to a wide range of health and hospital services at a minimal cost.[14]

Oscar Wylee New Zealand

Oscar Wylee opened its first New Zealand store in 2019 with the now closed Ponsonby store, and Mount Albert. They then expanded in 2021 opening more stores in Wellington Central, Queensgate, Auckland CBD, and Manukau. Since 2022, Oscar Wylee in New Zealand has provided school-aged kids five to 17 years old the opportunity to get their eyes tested at no charge.[15]

Oscar Wylee in Canada

Oscar Wylee first opened in Canada in 2021 with a store in Edmonton, Alberta, later expanding in 2022 with three additional stores.[16] Oscar Wylee stores are currently in operation in Canada in the provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec. Alongside selling prescription glasses and sunglasses, Oscar Wylee in Canada offers eye exams conducted by licensed opticians and optometrists independent from Oscar Wylee.
