Olio is an American rock band from Los Angeles, California. Formed in 1997 by Arif Hodzic (vocals/guitar), Tony Shibumi (bass/Chapman stick), and DeHaven Carrington (drums/vocals), the band is known for its genre-blending style, high-energy performances, and independent touring ethos. Olio combines elements of rock, funk, soul, and pop into a modern sound.

History

[edit]

The band’s name, Olio, is a reference to a blend or mixture, reflecting its diverse musical influences. They released their debut live album, ain’t no party like an Olio party...LIVE, in 1999, followed by the 3P EP in 2001.

After Shibumi’s departure in 2002, the band released Colour of Music in 2003 with bassist Alex Evans (Usher, Mariah Carey). Background vocalist Debbie Dee Morris contributed from 2003 to 2005.

In 2007, bassist Matt Sherrell joined the band. In 2009, they released Living the Dream, featuring the fan-favorite song "Soccer Mom" and collaborations with rap group Young Crew.

In 2011, Olio won a Battle of the Bands on the Santa Monica Pier[1], which earned them an opening slot for Dawes featuring Jackson Browne before a crowd of over 5,000 on September 1[2]. Later that year, Sherrell departed and Kelley Hill joined the band as bassist in October 2011.

In early 2012, Olio began working with acclaimed producer/engineer Eddie Kramer (Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Kiss, Peter Frampton) in Los Angeles on the Comeback Kings EP. In October 2012, Kramer invited the band to Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France, where they recorded tracks for the EP of the same name. During these sessions, the song "Rich People Problems" was written, and upon hearing a rehearsal version on an iPhone, Kramer insisted they record it immediately.

Beginning in 2013, Olio independently booked national tours across the U.S., performing in Arizona, New Mexico, at SXSW in Austin, New Orleans, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, Philadelphia, and New York City.

In June 2016, Olio performed in Anchorage, Alaska at the Road to Vans Warped Tour alongside Sum 41, Sleeping With Sirens, Crown the Empire, and Reel Big Fish. They returned to Anchorage in 2017 for AK Summerfest with Night Ranger, Lita Ford, Art of Dying, Pop Evil, and Dead Sara.

In 2017, the band released the single "New Year's Eve", produced by Joe Solo, who has worked with Macy Gray and Fergie (Black Eyed Peas). In 2018, they performed at the Hermosa Beach Summer Concerts for an audience of over 10,000[3].

Following the passing of original drummer DeHaven Carrington in 2019, Olio continued with drummer Barry Chenault, a mentor to Carrington and a veteran percussionist who has toured with George Clinton and the P-Funk All Stars, the Gap Band, performed with Donna Summer, and played Lollapalooza with Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E.

Since March 5, 2019, Olio has hosted a weekly livestream, Inside the OMG, airing every Tuesday at 7 p.m. Pacific Time, where they perform, interact with fans, and share stories from the road[4].
