Oleksandr Sushko (17 May 1973 in Uman, Cherkasy region) is a Ukrainian political scientist and public figure, Executive Director of the International Renaissance Foundation, an expert in international relations and civil society development. [1]

In 1995 he graduated from the History Department of the Kirovohrad Vynnychenko Pedagogical University.

In 1998 he received a PhD in Political Science in International Relations from the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Dissertation topic: The Political Context of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Regional Relations in the Western Hemisphere'.

In 2002 he was an intern at the Monterey Center for Nonproliferation Studies (USA).

Professional biography

In 1998, he began his active professional career as a political analyst.

1999-2000 was a Monitoring Coordinator at the Centre for Peace, Conversion and Foreign Policy of Ukraine.

n 2000-2006, worked as the Director of the Center for Peace, Conversion and Foreign Policy of Ukraine, and in 2006-2017, he served as the Research Director of the Institute for Euro-Atlantic Cooperation.

From 2011 to 2017, he was Chairman of the Board of the International Renaissance Foundation.

In addition, Oleksandr Sushko was the National Coordinator of the Ukrainian National Platform of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum and the first co-chair of the EU-Ukraine Civil Society Platform — the bilateral insitution established within the frames of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement to facilitate civil society cooperation and policy impact. (2015-2016).

He participated in the Orange Revolution (2004) and the Euromaidan (2013-2014).

On 21 June 2015, George Soros awarded the International Renaissance Foundation with the Open Society Prize for its contribution to the promotion of open society values in Ukraine. Sushko, together with Yevhen Bystrytsky (Executive Director of the Foundation), received the award from Soros during a ceremony at the Central European University in Budapest. This is the first time in the prize's history that it has been awarded to an organisation rather than an individual. Over the years, the prize has been awarded to such prominent figures as Vaclav Havel, Martti Ahtisaari, Mikheil Saakashvili, Kofi Annan, Javier Solana and others.

Orders

  • Order of Merit, 3rd class (19 June 2017) — for significant personal contribution to the realisation of Ukraine's European integration aspirations, the introduction of a visa-free regime by the European Union, the strengthening of the international authority of the state, many years of fruitful work and high professionalism.
