The Oklahoma Sooners men's ice hockey team is a Division 1, ACHA, club hockey team. They represent the University of Oklahoma.
History
[edit]The team was created in 2003, with the help of Allen Gray, Kelly Rose, and Craig McAllister.[1].
In 2011, the Sooners would hire Peter Arvanitis as the head coach. Arvanitis is the most successful Sooner Head coach, with a career record of 184-104-35 and lead the team to 6 different ACHA tournament apearences[2]. He left the team in 2018, bout would return in 2023.
The team was an ACHA Independent team for 10 years, until they found a home in the newly created Western Collegiate Hockey League. In that same year, the team would rise all the way to the No. 2 spot in the ACHA rankings. They would make it into the ACHA National Tournament, but lose in the semi-finals[1].
In the 2017-2018 season, the Sooners would beat the No. 1 ranked team in the country, the Lindenwood Lions[3].
During the 2024-2025 season, the Sooners would beat the Central Oklahoma Bronchos for the first time in 5 years in a 5-2 victory.
Rivalries
[edit]The Sooners have two main rivals, the University of Central Oklahoma Bronchos, and the Oklahoma State Cowboys. The Rivalry against the Bronchos is called the "I-35 Rivalry" since both schools are located on Interstate 35 in the Oklahoma City area. The Rivalry against the Cowboys is called the "Bedlam on Ice". It's a reference to the Bedlam Rivalry which is played against the two schools in the NCAA[4]
