Comment: All I am finding is routine coverage, announcements, mentions, etc. Would be better to include the information at Octapharma although I see that page has some major issues so not sure if it would be notable either. CNMall41 (talk) 18:54, 2 June 2025 (UTC)
Octapharma Plasma Inc. Octapharma Plasma Inc. is a United States-based company that operates a network of over 180 plasma donation centers. It is a subsidiary of Octapharma AG, a global healthcare company headquartered in Lachen, Switzerland, that develops and manufactures human protein therapies.
History
[edit]Octapharma Plasma was founded in 2007 to support the global operations of Octapharma AG by collecting source plasma in the United States. The collected plasma is used in the manufacture of plasma-derived medicines for the treatment of immune disorders, bleeding disorders, and other medical conditions.
In April 2024, Octapharma Plasma experienced a ransomware cyberattack attributed to the BlackSuit group.[1] The attack caused temporary closures of more than 190 plasma donation centers in the U.S. and disruptions to European operations.
Operations
[edit]As of 2025, Octapharma Plasma operates over 180 donation centers across the United States.[2] The company collects plasma via plasmapheresis, a process that separates plasma from blood and returns red blood cells to the donor. Donors are compensated for their time.
The company adheres to regulatory standards set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and follows guidelines from the Plasma Protein Therapeutics Association (PPTA).
Products and Research
[edit]Plasma collected by Octapharma is used to produce a variety of plasma-derived therapies, including:
- Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) – for immune deficiencies
- Albumin – used in critical care
- Coagulation factor concentrates – for bleeding disorders like hemophilia
These products are manufactured by Octapharma AG and distributed internationally.
Community Involvement
[edit]Octapharma Plasma participates in community outreach initiatives and health awareness campaigns. The company has appeared on local media programs and supports initiatives like World Primary Immunodeficiency Week.[3]
Recent plasma center openings have also been covered by regional media outlets as part of efforts to increase plasma access and economic investment in local communities.[4][5]
Criticism and Compliance
[edit]As with other plasma collection companies, Octapharma Plasma has faced scrutiny over issues including donor compensation, safety protocols, and recruitment practices. The company states that it complies with all applicable health and safety regulations and industry standards.
