Novoye literaturnoye obozreniye (Russian: Новое литературное обозрение, New Literary Review, known also by its abbreviation NLO) is a Russian philologhical scientific journal dedicated to the literature and culture theory and history, criticism, bibliography, and chronicles of literary events.
History
[edit]The journal has been published since 1992. It is currently one of the most professional and authoritative journals in Russia in the contemporary literature, criticism, and literary studies fields. The volume is approximately 500 pages. The frequency is 6 issues per year. Its chief editor is Candidate of Philological Sciences Irina Prokhorova. The editorial team also includes poet and translator A. V. Skidan and Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences A. I. Reitblat. The journal has departments of Theory and History.[1]
As the journal editor, Irina Prokhorova was awarded the State Prize of the Russian Federation for educational activities in the field of literature and art.[2]
For many years, NLO has been included in the list of publications recommended by the Higher Attestation Commission under the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia, where publications are credited to candidates for the academic degrees of Doctor and Candidate of Sciences.[3]
Historian S. L. Kozlov noted: "The NLO's authors and readers are usually people with a philological background, a significant number of whom are specialists in Russian literature of the 18th–20th centuries".[4] Professor Yuri Zaretsky noted in 2013: "In a short time, the journal has managed to achieve remarkable results and become not only a recognized national, but also an international brand of quality (I can only compare its current significance to that of the Odyssey yearbook in the early 1990s)".[5]
Concept
[edit]From the beginning, the journal was set out to create a new literary criticis for a new literature. The new literature was opposed to both — traditional literature (modeled on the opposition of modern art to earlier representational art), Soviet literature, and the realist trend in émigré literature: it included most of the phenomena of samizdat, tamizdat, and experimental literature. The magazine also offered new interpretations of classic works using experimental methods. At the same time, the journal tried not to go beyond the framework of literary studies and literary history, and to enrich the methods of literary studies, not to refute them, so, for example, a strictly psychoanalytic reading of the Russian classics was undesirable in the journal.[6]
Among the methods developed in the journal are intellectual history, social history of literature, discourse analysis, hermeneutics, post-structuralist criticism (French theory), institutional literary history, and a new reading of the legacy of Russian formalism and structuralism. Certain elements of receptive aesthetics in conjunction with the sociology of literature, such as the history of reading, have also been applied. At the same time, other areas of work, such as genetic criticism, textual studies, and genre theory, were more often presented in other philological journals.From the very beginning, the journal set out to create a new criticism for a new literature. In the jubilee 100th issue, published at the end of 2009, the chief editor I. D. Prokhorova announced the need for an Anthropological Turn, which was understood in this and subsequent issues as:[8]
- Interpreting Russian literature as part of a global sociocultural process, drawing on the resources of postcolonial, gender, and social criticism, as well as the theory of multiple modernities, where the Russian and Soviet experience are seen as more typical than unique;
- Broader application of critical theory, which requires considering world literature primarily as part of culture within immanent cultural processes;
- Introducing new research directions, such as the history of emotions, history of everyday life, performative theory, trauma studies, and others, which allow interpreting literary works as part of a broader cultural production;
- Expanding the understanding of literature to include scientific, philosophical works, and documents;
- A new reading of Soviet literature as a project of creating a new human and simultaneously reflecting the traumatic experience and the experience of censored silences.[9]
