The North Carolina End-Of-Grade Assessments (EOGs) are state standardized tests that began in 1996 and is administered by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction during the last 3 weeks of the school year required under North Carolina G.S. § 115C-174.11.[1][2][3] These tests are given to students starting in Grade 3, up until Grade 8.[4][5][6] Although in High School (9-12 Grade) EOCs or End-of-Course tests are taken for subjects like NC MATH 1 and NC MATH 3.[7] EOGs are required to be administered for Mathematics and Reading in all grades with Science EOGs taken in 5th and 8th grade.[5]

Scoring System

[edit]

The EOGs are scored on a ranking of 1 to 5 level scale.[8][9][4] Results will usually show a percentile score on a student's result sheet along with a Quantile score for Mathematics and a Lexile score for Reading. A score or level of 1 and 2 are considered not proficient meaning the student has not met state standards.[8][9]To to be considered proficient on an EOG, a student must score a 3, 4, or 5 in all subjects that the EOG was administered for.[8][9] If a student scored a non-proficient score on an EOG (Levels 1 and 2), they can generally qualify for a second chance where they can retake the test.[1]

EOG Released Resources

[edit]

As of May 5, 2025 The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) has released resources for educators and students from the NC 2020-2021 school year for EOGs, BOGs, and EOCs.[10] These are past assessments that were administered and include answer keys and test questions.[10] These resources by NCDPI help provide educators proper preparation for students to practice test prompts and enhance capabilities in responding to different types of questions. [11](To access resources for EOGs, EOCs, and BOGs, click here). Students can train and practice for the EoG by reviewing information they have learned throughout the year for both/all subjects they take the EoG in.[12]

Mathematics

[edit]

The Mathematics EoG is administered for all students in grades 3-8 every year[4][13]

The Cuts for the North Carolina General Education Mathematics EOG is shown below according to NCDPI.[8]

Mathematics Cuts
Test Grade Not Proficient Level 3 Level 4 Level 5
General Education Mathematics 3 ≤ 544 545 - 550 551 - 559 ≥ 560
General Education Mathematics 4 ≤ 546 547 - 551 552 - 559 ≥ 560
General Education Mathematics 5 ≤ 545 546 - 550 551 - 560 ≥ 561
General Education Mathematics 6 ≤ 545 546 - 550 551 - 560 ≥ 561
General Education Mathematics 7 ≤ 545 546 - 549 550 - 559 ≥ 560
General Education Mathematics 8 ≤ 542 543 - 547 548 - 554 ≥ 555

Anything that is Level 3 and above is considered proficient and meets NC Readiness Standards.[8] All scores that are non-proficient are not up to standard and students who do not meet state standards are able to take a second chance test to improve their score.[8]

Reading

[edit]

Like the Mathematics EoG, all students in 3-8 grade have to be given the Reading EoG every year.[4][13]

The Reading EoG tests and measures student's skill proficiency on language, informational text, and comprehensive reading. The EoG contains open-ended questions based on different types of text (Informational text, literature, etc.) that students use to answer the question prompt.[14]

Items on EoG can be ranked by DoK achievement level which is shown below.[9]

Grade DoK 1 DoK 2 DoK 3
3 20 - 40% 60 - 80% --
4 12 - 25% 50 - 75% 5 - 10%
5 -- 75 - 90% 10 - 25%
6 -- 60 - 82% 18 - 40%
7 -- 60 - 82% 18 - 40%
8 -- 60 - 82% 18 - 40%

Science

[edit]

Unlike the Mathematics and Reading EoG, Science is given to Grades 5 and 8 only.[15][4][13]

The Science EoG measures the students proficiency in Science course and demonstrates what the test taker has learned throughout the school year.[15]

According to NCDPI, Science EoGs are to be taken in the last 10 days of the school year in an traditional school year calendar.[15]

Retention from an EOG

[edit]

Students who are given the EOG do not usually have the EOG determine retention for them. The EOG shows a students proficiency and does not demonstrate a students capabilities and thought process to their full extent. For this reason, a student that scores a 1 or 2 in the non-proficiency level will not be held back only because of this score.[5]

NC Test

[edit]

NC Test is a testing program by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction used for EoGs, EoCs, NC Check-Ins and more. The NC Test program includes an Online Assessment Tutorial on how to use the website for testing which mentions at the top of the tutorial options that all test takers online must see the tutorial at least once before the actual test.[16]
