Noga is a Swiss singer, composer, and improviser. Active since the 1990s, she has developed a distinctive musical universe blending chanson,world-jazz, and spirituality. She is also a vocal educator and founder of Catalyse, an arts and voice center in Geneva where she created the sonoga© method, which integrates voice, breath, and body-mind practices.

Her work has been featured in major French-speaking media such as Le Monde.[1], RFI[2][3], and RTS[4][5]

She has released several albums as a solo artist or in collaboration, including Kurt Weill Jazz Songs (2000, Sony Classical), Next (2018), Et si... (2020), and LEV (2023), the latter being a contemporary reinterpretation of Hebrew psalms that drew critical attention.

Biography

[edit]

Noga was born in Geneva into a family with roots in Haifa (Israel) and Berlin (Germany). She received her initial musical training in Geneva and continued her studies in Boston and London, specializing in voice, vocal improvisation, stage performance, circle singing, and body-mind disciplines.

Musical career

[edit]

Since the 1990s, Noga has built a personal artistic universe that blends vocal improvisation, world-jazz, chanson, and spirituality. She performs in French, Hebrew, and English, and collaborates with artists such as Patrick Bebey and her son Asher Varadi.[6]

In 2018, she released the album Next, with lyrics co-written by Marie Nimier and Thierry Illouz.[7] The album was selected by RTS.[4] That same year, she composed "Chant de paix", a music video produced with the support of RTS and in collaboration with TV5Monde and the EBU.[8]

In 2020, she released the live studio album Et si...[9] and in 2023, she published LEV, a Hebrew-language album of psalms, which was featured in Le Monde.[1]

In 2025, Noga and her son Asher Varadi toured Japan with their project Komorebi, which brought together voice, electronics, dance, and live calligraphy. The performances featured Japanese artists Yuka Oishi (dance) and Houkyu Usui (calligraphy).[10]

Other musical and theatrical projects

[edit]

Noga has participated in various musical and interdisciplinary projects. She formed the duo ASAP2 with percussionist Thierry Hochstätter, blending voice and sound environment.[11] She is also a member of the Muqarnas ensemble, performing a cappella works from spiritual traditions including Hebrew chant, Orthodox Slavonic chant, and Moroccan Sufi sama.[12]

Noga occasionally returns to her theatrical roots. In 2024, she adapted her album LEV into a stage performance co-written with Sephora Haymann.[13]

Critical reception

[edit]
  • Le Monde included LEV in its selection of albums in April 2023.[1]
  • RFI featured Noga in two programs discussing her spiritual and musical approach: En Sol Majeur by Yasmine Chouaki[2] and Vous m'en direz des nouvelles by Marjorie Bertin.[3]
  • RTS has regularly featured her music and interviews in broadcasts and concerts.[5][14]

Pedagogical work and improvisation

[edit]

Noga is the founder and director of Catalyse, a Geneva-based center for vocal training and artistic development. There, she developed the sonoga© method, which integrates breathing, bodywork, and voice with a focus on group dynamics and individual expression, drawing from body-mind approaches.[15]

She also teaches vocal improvisation and circle song techniques and serves as the artistic director of the AVOCLAP Festival, dedicated to vocal and body improvisation.[16]
