The Nobel Sustainability Trust (NST) is a non-governmental organization established in 2007 in Switzerland by members of the Nobel family, descendants of Ludvig Nobel, the brother of Alfred Nobel.[1] The Trust aims to promote sustainable development and recognize outstanding contributions in the fields of energy, water, agriculture, and sustainability leadership.

History

[edit]

The organization was originally founded as the Nobel Charitable Trust before being renamed the Nobel Sustainability Trust in 2011 to better reflect its mission and focus on global sustainability.[2] The NST operates independently of the Nobel Foundation that awards the Nobel Prizes, although it was established by family members connected to the Nobel legacy.[3]

Mission

[edit]

The NST's mission is to promote sustainable economic growth that preserves and enhances the planet's living systems. It focuses on:[4]

  • Reducing climate change impacts through the promotion of non-polluting and renewable technologies.
  • Accelerating the transition to sustainable societies by supporting initiatives that increase prosperity, improve governance, and enhance transparency.
  • Creating a pollution-free and life-sustaining environment within the Earth's carrying capacity.

Awards

[edit]

The Sustainability Awards are presented annually by the Nobel Sustainability Trust to recognize individuals, organizations, or companies for notable achievements in advancing sustainable development. These honours are awarded across several categories, each highlighting different contributions to environmental, social, and economic sustainability.

The award categories include:

  • Award for Leadership in Implementation
  • Award for Outstanding Research and Development
  • Medal for Outstanding Contribution to Sustainability

The Leadership in Implementation and Outstanding Research and Development awards were introduced in 2023. Recipients are selected through a competitive process organized by the Institute for Advanced Study at the Technical University of Munich (TUM-IAS), involving international experts and scientific committees.[5]

The Medal for Outstanding Contribution to Sustainability, established in 2022, is awarded by the NST's founders and board of directors. It honours political and economic leaders whose long-term efforts have significantly advanced sustainability initiatives on a global scale.[6]

[edit]

The selection process for the Nobel Sustainability Trust Awards is coordinated by the Institute for Advanced Study at the Technical University of Munich (TUM-IAS) and involves a two-stage evaluation by independent expert committees.[14]

  • The International Pre-Selection Committee comprises 10 to 15 internationally recognized professors, researchers, and entrepreneurs. These experts are appointed annually by the NST and TUM-IAS, based on the thematic focus of that year’s awards.
  • The TUM Final Selection Committee includes faculty members from various schools and departments within TUM. The committee members are selected for their expertise in sustainability-related research and entrepreneurship.

Summits

[edit]

The NST organizes annual Sustainability Summits to facilitate dialogue among global leaders, policymakers, and innovators. These events aim to address pressing environmental challenges and promote sustainable solutions.
