Nils P. Heeßel is a german Assyriologist, and Professor at the University Philipps Marburg.
Life
[edit]Heeßel studied Near Eastern Archaeology, Assyriology and Egyptology in Heidelberg (1989-1991) and Berlin (1991-1992). He obtained his Master in Heidelberg in 1994 and was awarded his doctorate summa cum laude in Assyriology in 1999.[1]
From 1996-1998 he was a fellow in the Research Training Group 197 ‘Religion and Normativity’[2], and from 1998 to 2002, he worked as a research assistant at the Department of Languages and Cultures of the Near East - Department of Assyriology at the University of Heidelberg, where he was a research assistant from 2002 to 2003.[1] From 2004 to 2005 he was a research assistant at the Department of Ancient Near Eastern Studies at the University of Würzburg.[1]
At the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, he worked as a research assistant on the project edition of literary cuneiform texts from Assur from 2005 to 2014.[3] In 2009, he completed his habilitation at Heidelberg University with his habilitation thesis "Die Opferschau in Assur. Studien zur Entwicklung und Serialisierung der Opferschau-Kompendien in Babylonien und Assyrien" (The sacrificial display in Assur. Studies on the development and serialisation of sacrificial display compendia in Babylonia and Assyria)[4][3] and was appointed adjunct professor of Assyriology there in 2014. From 2014-2017 he was a member of academic staff at the Department of Ancient Near Eastern Studies at the University of Würzburg.[1]
Heeßel has been Professor of Ancient Near Eastern Studies at the Philipps University of Marburg since 2017, and since 2023, he has been the spokesperson for the DFG Research Training Group 2844 ‘Staging Religious Atmosphere in Ancient Cultures’[5].[1]
His research focuses on Akkadian studies, Near Eastern archaeology, Ancient Near Eastern divination, medicine, demonology and the history of religion as well as the Babylonian-Assyrian history of ideas and science in the 2nd and 1st century BC.
