NewsDrum is an Indian digital-first news platform owned by BMI Group of Publications. Launched in April 2022 by journalist Niraj Sharma, the platform publishes news, analysis, and multimedia content in English and Hindi, with an emphasis on technology-driven, data-led reporting on politics, business, and current affairs.[1]

History

[edit]

NewsDrum has declared its intent upfront for a cleaner news environment. The platform claims to have prohibited the news coverage from angles such as Hindu, Muslim, Dalit, etc.[2]

On its second anniversary in 2024, NewsDrum expanded its coverage to include original investigations, in-depth explainers, and video commentary in both English and Hindi, as reported by Dainik Bhaskar and News18 Hindi.[3][4]

Editorial scope and approach

[edit]

NewsDrum is recognised for its integration of artificial intelligence and analytics in editorial operations, including news curation, fact-checking, and data visualisation, as reported by Storyboard18.[5] Its daily offerings include a morning news brief, typically under 200 words, and long-form explainers on major news topics. NewsDrum also publishes video commentary and interviews with subject-matter experts.

Impact and recognition

[edit]

In April 2022, within a month of its launch, NewsDrum published an exposé highlighting the use of exaggerated visuals and unverified nuclear claims in the Russia-Ukraine war coverage by leading Indian television channels. According to Storyboard18, three days after the report, the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting issued an advisory urging all broadcasters to “refrain from any form of hyperbole or sensationalism” when reporting on armed conflict. This was the first time the ministry cited NewsDrum’s findings to address misleading war reportage.[5]

In October 2024, NewsDrum reported on editorial bias in Wikipedia’s entries for Indian news channels. The coverage led Wikipedia editors to remove the “Modi-aligned media” label from several channel pages, including Aaj Tak and CNN-News18. Mainstream outlets such as ABP Live credited NewsDrum for prompting this editorial change and sparking a broader debate on the subject.[6]

Its reporting has also been referenced by international research and news organizations, including Hindenburg Research during the Adani-SEBI investigation,[7] and RFI in coverage of Indian media trends.[8]

Leadership

[edit]

Niraj Sharma, NewsDrum’s founder and editor-in-chief, is recognised for his work in Indian digital journalism. He has contributed commentary on media industry developments and press freedom, and his leadership has drawn coverage in national and international media, including TOI, Madhyamam, and RFI, particularly during major legal and press freedom disputes.[9][10]
