Ncuti Gatwa (born 15 October 1992) is a Rwandan-Scottish actor. He is best known for his role as Eric Effiong in the Netflix series Sex Education (2019–2023) and for being cast as the Fifteenth Doctor in the BBC science fiction series Doctor Who (2024–present). Gatwa has also appeared in the film Barbie (2023).

Early life and education

Gatwa was born in Nyarugenge, Kigali, Rwanda. His family fled Rwanda during the Rwandan genocide and settled in Scotland, where he was raised in Edinburgh and Dunfermline.[1] He studied acting at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Acting in 2013.[2]

After graduating, Gatwa performed in theater productions with Dundee Repertory Theatre and appeared in minor television roles, including in Stonemouth (2015).

Sex Education

Gatwa gained prominence for his portrayal of Eric Effiong in the Netflix series Sex Education, which premiered in 2019.[3] His performance was widely praised for its humor and emotional depth, earning him a BAFTA Scotland Award for Best Actor in Television and multiple BAFTA TV Award nominations.[4]

Doctor Who and other roles

In May 2022, it was announced that Gatwa would portray the Fifteenth Doctor in Doctor Who, succeeding Jodie Whittaker and becoming the first Black actor to lead the series in a full-time role.[5]

In 2023, Gatwa appeared in Greta Gerwig’s film Barbie, portraying one of the versions of Ken.[6]

Gatwa has spoken publicly about his experiences as a Black Scottish actor and his advocacy for greater representation in media.[7]
