Draft:Nauscopy

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nauscopy is an American independent record label based in Maine. It is known for its eclectic and often transgressive output. Founded in 1991 by Brent Field as a cassette label in California, the label would later release pressed compact discs and vinyl records starting in 1996, including acts such as Faxed Head, the Feederz, Sun City Girls, and Crank Sturgeon, among many others. Field was involved with the guitarist from Spazz in the early 1990s, in a band called Sheep Squeeze, who appeared amongst the label's releases. Nauscopy has also released recordings from 78 rpm records.

The label is known for unusual releases and lore.[1] One such release was an LP from 2024 issued in a metallic gold jacket with no apparent artist name or album title.[2] A series of LPs was centered around short non-music pieces submitted by fans. It is said that in 2007 Field sold the label to a man in Wisconsin on behalf of his 12-year-old daughter as a gift to her.[3] Field did cease operations of the label for a time; however no instance of the label in Wisconsin ever manifested.

One release, a compilation called "Monumentally Retarded", spent several weeks at #1 on WNEC-FM in 1997.

Another release, titled "Wrong Number Please", consisted of recorded telephone error messages from unusual places such as Bhutan, Myanmar, Libya, Yemen, etc. (2006)

An LP released by the label featured a defaced version of Black Flag's "Damaged" LP, savaging numerous other well-known acts in absurdist fashion.[4]
