The National Institute of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases (NITRD) is an autonomous institute under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, research, and training related to tuberculosis (TB) and other respiratory diseases. Established originally as a tuberculosis hospital in 1956, it was elevated to an institute in 1991 and granted national status in 2013.[2][3]

NITRD functions as a premier center in India for clinical care, research, and postgraduate training in tuberculosis and respiratory medicine. It provides specialized outpatient and inpatient services, including a 470-bed hospital and outpatient department with an average attendance of 600 patients per day. The institute also operates specialized clinics for lung cancer, HIV medicine, sleep medicine, allergic disorders, and tobacco cessation. Its thoracic surgery department is one of the few in the country and serves patients from neighboring countries as well.[1]

History

[edit]

The institute began as a tuberculosis hospital in 1956, reflecting the urgent need to combat TB in India. It was upgraded to an institute in 1991 to expand its role in research and training. In 2013, it was accorded national status, recognizing its importance in national TB control efforts and respiratory disease management.[4]

Facilities and Services

[edit]

NITRD includes a 470-bed hospital, outpatient clinics, and specialized departments such as thoracic surgery and critical care units. It has a state-of-the-art negative pressure ward for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) patients and a 40-bed private ward. The institute provides intensive care services for sputum-positive TB patients and offers outreach diagnostic and treatment facilities.[1]

The institute also houses laboratories dedicated to chest diseases, including microbiology, pathology, radiology, and pulmonary function testing. It offers training in bronchoscopy, sleep medicine, and intensive care, among others.[5]

Academic and Training Programs

[edit]

NITRD is recognized as a center for postgraduate training in respiratory diseases, offering Diplomate of National Board (DNB) courses with accreditation for multiple primary and secondary seats annually. It conducts regular teaching activities including seminars, journal clubs, clinical rounds, and case presentations.[6]

The institute organizes continuing medical education (CME) programs, workshops, and conferences focusing on tuberculosis and respiratory disease diagnosis and management. It also provides training to medical and paramedical personnel involved in the Revised National Tuberculosis Elimination Program (NTEP).[7]

Research

[edit]

NITRD undertakes clinical and epidemiological research on tuberculosis and respiratory diseases to inform national control strategies. It collaborates with national and international organizations for research and policy development.[8]

Role in National Tuberculosis Control

[edit]

The institute plays a key role in supporting the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Program (NTEP) by providing training, diagnostic services, and expert clinical care. It serves as a referral center for complicated TB cases including drug-resistant TB.[1]

Media coverage

[edit]

The institute has been featured in reputable news outlets reporting on tuberculosis control efforts and challenges. For example, the Times of India reported on temporary closure of the institute's OPD for a summit in 2023.[9] The institute's role in managing drug-resistant TB cases has also been covered, including reports of extensively drug-resistant TB cases diagnosed at NITRD.[10]
