2026 Senate election

[edit]

Before he ran for the Senate, Sage worked for two years as an Executive Director of Knoxville, Iowa Chamber of Commerce.[2][5]

In April of 2025, Sage announced his intention to run as a Democrat against two-term Republican Joni Ernst in the 2026 United States Senate election in Iowa.[6] Nathan Sage was the first Democrat to formally launch a Senate campaign against Ernst.[1]In his campaign video, Sage called Ernst a "corporate Republican" then soon after saying that “There’s a war at home and we’re losing. Unions under attack. Farmers f---ed over. … The economy is rigged, and those in power don’t give a damn. They’re the ones doing it,” He then said about the Democratic Party that he wanted “to tear the Democratic Party down and build it back up from the studs,” because according to him, it was out of touch with Americans.[3] Sage also said that he would kick off his campaign by travelling around Iowa to have conversations with voters.[4]

During the campaign, Sage said that he was running a campaign centered on fighting for the working class, tackling corruption in Washington, and supporting veterans, small businesses, small towns and family farms.[7] Sage also spoke out against the budget cuts to the Department of Veterans Affairs, commenting on Joni Ernst supporting it by saying “I mean it’s a travesty that’s she’s ok with 80,000 plus VA jobs going away and when she’s a veteran you’re supposed to be not leaving fallen comrades behind and I think that’s what she’s doing.”[8]

On May 30, Nathan Sage went to meet with voters in Parkersburg, Iowa where he sat down with a voter after she was visibly frustrated with Joni Ernst Town Hall, to which he responded "“I’m here to meet with potential constituents and people looking for another option especially when it comes to Joni Ernst,” and “There’s a lot of energy, and yeah, a lot of anger. But that anger is coming from a place of caring.” Later at the event, Sage responded to a person who was worried about veterans care, to were he responded with “I’m glad they showed up,” and “They didn’t have to. But I think they’re looking for something different. And I want them to know I’m here, I hear them—and I’ll fight for them.”[9]
