Draft:NEP Custom Cable Assembly Manufacturer

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

NEP Electronics is a U.S.-based contract manufacturer specializing in custom cable assemblies, wire harnesses, and electromechanical integration. The company is also a franchised distributor of electronic components. Headquartered in Wood Dale, Illinois, NEP serves original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) across the industrial, medical, commercial, and electronic equipment sectors. NEP stays competitive as a U.S.-based manufacturer by combining its role as a franchised distributor of electronic components with high-speed automation from advanced equipment such as Komax and Schleuniger machines.[1]

History

[edit]

NEP Electronics was founded in 1977 by Bill Federighi and Tom Lotus, both veterans of the electronic components industry. Initially focused on distributing components for coin-operated machines in the Chicago area, the company later expanded into value-added manufacturing, including wire harnesses and cable assemblies.[2]

In 2006, NEP opened a new facility in Franklin, Wisconsin, to support increased warehousing and manufacturing capabilities.[2]

In 2009, NEP acquired a 40,000 square foot building at 795 Mittel Drive, adjacent to its headquarters, to consolidate and expand its operations.[3]

In 2015, the company expanded westward by opening a service and inventory facility in Las Vegas, Nevada.[2]

In 2024, NEP underwent a rebranding effort, updating its visual identity and web domain while maintaining the same leadership and ownership.[1]

Operations

[edit]

NEP provides engineering support, rapid prototyping, component sourcing, and full production services. Its facilities feature automation equipment from Komax, Schleuniger, and Artos, capable of high-speed wire processing for a range of applications. NEP supports both prototyping and high-volume production, with wire sizes ranging from 30 AWG to 4/0. All assemblies undergo 100% testing for continuity, insulation resistance, and pull-force as needed.[2]

Its production team is IPC/WHMA-A-620 certified, and the company holds ISO 9001:2015 and UL certifications. Testing equipment includes CAMI CableEye and HipotULTRA systems.[2]

Distribution

[edit]

NEP is a franchised distributor for over 50 manufacturers, including Molex, TE Connectivity, JST, 3M, and Panduit. This allows the company to integrate sourcing directly into manufacturing projects, providing competitive pricing and better supply chain control.[4]

Facilities

[edit]

NEP operates out of two adjacent buildings in Wood Dale, Illinois, with over 75,000 square feet of combined space. The facilities include ESD-safe soldering stations, climate-controlled inventory areas, and a dedicated quality lab.[2]

The Franklin, Wisconsin facility provides additional warehousing and local support for upper Midwest customers. The Las Vegas location focuses on service and inventory management for Western U.S. clients.[2]

Quality and Compliance

[edit]

NEP Electronics maintains a robust quality management system aligned with international and industry-specific standards. The company is certified to ISO 9001:2015, which ensures its processes meet global benchmarks for product consistency, traceability, and customer satisfaction.[5]

NEP is also certified to IPC/WHMA-A-620E, the industry standard for cable and wire harness assemblies. Its production staff includes multiple in-house J-STD-001 trainers, which allows NEP to maintain strict soldering and assembly practices in line with IPC Class 2 workmanship criteria.[2]

The company is a UL Recognized Manufacturer, capable of building cable assemblies that meet UL standards when specified. While UL listing is not required for all builds, NEP maintains the necessary systems to deliver fully compliant assemblies when needed.[4]

NEP is ITAR compliant and classified under EAR99, allowing it to engage in defense-related manufacturing while adhering to U.S. export regulations. This compliance helps ensure secure handling of sensitive or restricted technical data.

The company is also an active member of the Electronic Representatives Association (ERA), aligning with professional ethics and best practices across the electronics industry.

Industries Served

NEP serves a variety of sectors, including:

  • Industrial automation and robotics
  • Medical devices
  • Food and agriculture equipment
  • Energy and utility systems
  • Coin-operated and vending machines
