Career

[edit]

Film Direction

[edit]

Mustajab Malik made his feature film directorial debut with 'Majaz – A Life in Poetry', co-directed with Huma Khalil.[4] The film is a biopic on the legendary Urdu poet Majaz Lakhnawi and explores his literary journey and personal struggles. The film received critical acclaim and earned Malik and Khalil the Best Directors Award at the New York City Film Infest 2023.

Following this success, Malik wrote and directed the Hindi-language feature film 'Takila', which delves into the tradition of marriage bands in India. The film examines the cultural transformation of this celebratory tradition and was released globally on platforms like Apple TV and Google Play.[5]

He further expanded his cinematic repertoire with God Must Die,[6] a philosophical feature film inspired by Fyodor Dostoevsky's Notes from Underground. The narrative also incorporates the philosophical perspectives of Friedrich Nietzsche, Richard Dawkins, and the ancient Indian materialist school of Charvaka, along with poetic reflections from Allama Iqbal 's Shikwa. The film was well received at the Cannes Film Festival 2024 and was nominated for Best Film at several international film festivals. Actor Sandeep Kartar Singh won the Best Actor Award for his role in the film at the World Film Festival in France.[7][8]

Documentaries and Television Work

[edit]

In addition to feature films, Malik has directed several critically noted documentaries and docu-dramas including:

Bazaar Karte Hain Baatein Naye Puraney Zamaney Ki (a documentary for Rajya Sabha TV on evolving marketplaces and oral histories) Mahamana (a docu-drama on the life and legacy of Pt. Madan Mohan Malviya) Charagh e Hind (a docu-drama television series aired on Zee TV showcasing India's spiritual and intellectual heritage) Kaal: Concept of Time in India (a documentary examining traditional and philosophical interpretations of time in Indian thought) Kitab Ki Kahani: From Oral Recitation to Printing Press (a historical journey of storytelling traditions and book production in India) Kaprey Ka Safar: Story of Fabrics in India (a documentary that explores the cultural and economic history of textiles in the Indian subcontinent)
