Mount Vayotssar (Armenian: Վայոցսար) is an extinct stratovolcano located in the Vayots Dzor Province of southern Armenia. Rising to an elevation of approximately 2,581 meters (8,468 feet), it is part of the Armenian Highlands and holds both geological and cultural significance in the region.
Geography
[edit]Mount Vayotssar is situated near the village of Herher, northeast of the provincial center, Yeghegnadzor, and close to the historical Selim Pass, once a critical point on the ancient Silk Road. The region surrounding the mountain features rugged terrain, alpine pastures, and panoramic views of southern Armenia.
Geology
[edit]Mount Vayotssar is classified as an extinct stratovolcano, formed through a series of volcanic eruptions during the Quaternary period. Although the exact date of its last eruption is unknown, visible lava flows and volcanic formations testify to its volcanic origin. The name "Vayotssar" is believed to mean "Mountain of Wailing", possibly referring to historical natural disasters such as eruptions or earthquakes in the region.
Flora and Fauna
[edit]The slopes and surrounding areas are covered with alpine and subalpine vegetation, including wildflowers and grasses. The region supports diverse wildlife such as foxes, eagles, and migratory birds, making it a habitat of ecological importance.
History and Culture
[edit]The area near Mount Vayotssar is historically significant due to its proximity to the Silk Road. The Orbelian Caravanserai (also known as Selim Caravanserai), built in 1332, is located nearby and served as a shelter for merchants and travelers. Local legends and oral traditions associate the mountain with ancient Armenian folklore.
Tourism
[edit]Today, Mount Vayotssar is a popular destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts. Its scenic views, relatively accessible location, and connection to historical routes make it an attractive site for ecotourism in Armenia.
