Mother ports[1][2] are special category of ports that can handle very large cargo ships, including ultra large container ships and ultra large tankers, these kind of ports are often become transshipment hub and acts as intermediate points of exchange of containers. Most of these type of ports are automated as huge cargo volumes are swapped.

Background

In early 21st century, sizes of ultra large containerships expanded rapidly from 10,000 TEU capacity to 24,000 TEU capacity ships, these type of ships are known as motherships.[3]
