The artist Moosaramthota Eshwariah was born in the year 1940 in Hyderabad State (now Hyderabad District, Telangana State, India). His abstract form works, which include offset prints, photo painting, oil colour/waterproof ink roller prints, pen drawings, and watercolours, show the relationship between humans and birds in outer space. In 1980 and 1982, he was awarded the Gold Medal twice by A. P. Lalit Kala Akademi.

Early life

In 1940, M. Eshwariah was born in Hyderabad District, Telangana, India, into a family of blacksmiths, Moosaramthota Narayana and Agamma. The family used to run a workshop to make and repair chariots/ baggies during the Nizam’s reign. He grew up in a joint-Hindu-family. His father was greatly respected among the Vishwakarma community. Although being associated to a big family, the artist always found himself alone. He does his schooling in Viveka Vardhani School, at Jam Bagh, Koti.

He used to visit his cousin sister’s house in Ameerpet during his school holidays. An Artist from Maharashtra used to be a tenant at his cousin sister’s house. A frequent interaction with the artist has developed an interest towards art in him. He was an average student in his academics. At an early age, he learned sign board painting from the artist.

After completing PUC, he went for Indian Navy Academy Selection at Bombay (now Mumbai). He got rejected because of his under-weight personality. Dejected, he come back to the Maharashtrian artist, and continued doing sign-board painting. He encouraged him to join JNTU Fine Arts College. There he got admission into Applied Arts rather than Fine Arts.

To meet the expenses involved in learning art, he used to work at his father’s workshop until his father demise in 1963.

Career, friends and family

Being obtained Diploma in Fine Arts, he joined Adventures and started his career as a commercial artist. But his passion for painting never died and now got few monies to explore himself in painting on paper art boards. Since college days Dutt, Ratnakar, Bandi Rajan Babu and Krishna Murthy were his close friends.

The Trio - Dutt, Ratnakar and Eshwariah started a Design Firm named as ‘DRE’. The sudden demise of Dutt brought the firm to a closure. After few years, he got a job in National Institute of Nutrition as a Commercial Artist. Being elder brother in the family, he was taking care of his three younger brothers’ livelihood. The salary at NIN was not meeting the requirement. In 1969, he got married to Kumari, daughter of Kondapaka Kalidas and Kamala. Due to the court dispute, he has to leave the ancestors bungalow (Gol Bungalow) along with his wife, three brothers and widow mother.

Soon he left NIN and joined Vidyut Soudha, for hike in a salary. During, 1969 Telangana agitation he had to lose his job at Vidyut Soudha for being a part of agitation. A year later, he joined SIET INSTITUTE, Yousufguda, as a Senior Commercial Artist, and remained here till he took voluntary retirement in 1998. After joining Siet Institute, over the years he explored various art forms like painting (which remained his greatest passion till the very end), sculpture, typography, etching, and carving and created some fascinating objects d'art.

His wife Kumari is a very quite person, contributed as an unseen hand in all his works, although not direct. He has two daughters Navaneetha and Sangeetha and a son, Sanjay Kumar. He performed his elder daughter’s marriage with an advocate Kasoju Yadagiri Chary belonging to Azeez Nagar.

On 29 December 2003 he died due to brain stroke, surviving his wife, unmarried younger daughter and son.

In 2007 his younger daughter Sangeetha got married to Manchirevula Srinath Chary, belonging to Vengal Rao Nagar. In 2013, his son got married to Mamatha, belonging to Mahbubnagar.

The artist has experimented with various tools and mediums to express his creative realms. He used pen drawings, watercolour medium, roller-print by oil colour/waterproof inks, offset prints, and marble stone rubble and pebbles to create various works. Pen drawings used rotring drawing pen on paper, bringing varying tonal values and contrast. Watercolour medium used water colours on paper, resulting in figurative and still-life paintings. Offset prints used greasy ink on aluminium plates, creating dramatic effects through repeated runs. Photo painting used developing solution and photo bromide paper, resulting in still-life and figurative. The developing solution reacts with silver-salts on the exposed bromide paper, turning to varying black masses. Lastly, marble stone rubble and pebbles were used to create fascinating stone sculptures. One of his works, 'Forms', won the Gold Medal from A.P. Lalit Kala Akademi and won the Binnale Award for his miniature sculpture, 'United'.

21 Friends Artists Group Member

It was in August 1978 a few young artists of Hyderabad and Secunderabad thought of forming “Friends Artists Group” to work together to share and exchange their ideas and to create a living complex for the artists. Mr. Charansingh Gill as President, Mr. G.Y.Giri as Secretary and Mr. Narendra Rai as Treasurer elected by the group. The group was so active and organised exhibitions at Kalabhavan, Hyderabad and Jehanghir Art Gallery, Bombay. Conducted working camps at Srisailam, Hampi and Warangal.

Engineering Edge

The artist also holds an engineering edge, which he used to bring out several marvels like cement brick with buit-in bolt-nut, compass, wooden cigar, miniatures like wooden pen-stands, wooden mallet. These are kept at gallery for public viewing.

Adopting the Digital Medium

At the age of 60 years, he learned computers and did Digital Paintings using various Graphic softwares.

Last Graphic

During his last days he drew a graphic of “Lord Shiva” and on asking about the missing Third Eye, the artist said “It is Me!” “It is You!”.

On 29 December 2003, the artist died.

The Journey Continues...

Inspired by the life of the artist, his son M. Sanjay Kumar founded Eshwarasai Kala Niketan to promote art and created a platform for the artists to exhibit their artworks at M. Eshwariah Art Gallery.
