Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment is a motion-based haunted dark ride located in Dark Universe-themed area in Universal Epic Universe, fourth park overall to open at Universal Orlando Resort.
Summary
[edit]Queue
[edit]The guests walk through a winding path which contains the pictures of Henry Frankenstein and Elizabeth Frankenstein which are hanging over the fireplace.
Another room contains the original body of Frankenstein's monster which has been preserved in a tank and is currently being scanned by machinery. The sign lists it as "Specimen: V1.0 - H. Frankenstein
One wall shows footage of how Henry Frankenstein's great-great-granddaughter Victoria Frankenstein has managed to capture the Wolf Man and the Brides of Dracula.
Pre-show
[edit]The guests attend a pre-show where Victoria Frankenstein and Ygor talk about the catacomb navigation ride. Then Victoria introduces her version of Frankenstein's monster who she considers a friend and not a monster. She announces her project to get control of Count Dracula who she has captured. A projection of Count Dracula appears to badmouth Victoria as her creation gives a negative reaction to that.
Ride
[edit]As the ride begins, a church bell is heard above implied to be rung by Quasimodo. Upon entering the underground lab, the guests see an unmasked Phantom of the Opera playing a pipe organ that shoots fire from it's pipes. As Victoria begins her experiment with her creation using his body as a conduit to a machine that is holding Count Dracula captive, something goes wrong as the machine turns red and Count Dracula escapes.
The Brides of Dracula emerge from their coffins and attack under the orders of Count Dracula. Victoria Frankenstein and her creation fight two of the Brides of Dracula. The guests then see a glimpse of the Gill-man. The Wolf Man then pursues the guests and is about to attack when Frankenstein's creation grabs it. He then uses an electrical coil to subdue the Wolf Man.
The guests' vehicle then comes across the tomb of the mummy Imhotep as he emerges from its sarcophagus to talk ill about Victoria by quoting "Who is the true monster? The one in chains or the one who put them there?" After fighting off an unseen creature, Victoria appears telling her guests not to listen to Imhotep and throws a torch at Imhotep to drive him off.
When the guests' vehicle is encountered by Count Dracula and his brides, Victoria has Ygor filter some sunlight into the room which hurts the Brides of Dracula. Using a reflective mirror, Frankenstein's creation reflects some sunlight towards Count Dracula enough to harm him.
As Victoria states "All monsters will bow before the name Frankenstein", Ygor says goodbye to the guests as he is swarmed upon by some bats as the ride ends.
Production
[edit]History
[edit]On August 1, 2019, NBCUniversal announced that it was building a fourth new theme park at Universal Orlando named Universal's Epic Universe.[1] Chairman and CEO of Universal Parks & Resorts at the time, Tom Williams, released a statement labeling Epic Universe the "most immersive and innovative theme park" the company had ever created.
Concept art released by Universal during the official announcement in August 2019 left details purposely vague. Many IPs were rumored to appear in the park, including lands dedicated to How to Train Your Dragon, Fantastic Beasts, Universal Classic Monsters, and the Nintendo franchises Super Mario and Donkey Kong. In late 2021, patents were filed for a new motion-based dark ride, which features elements similar to the technology used on Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey.[2]
On January 30, 2024, an overall layout of Epic Universe was released in a press release confirming the Dark Universe area (themed to Universal Classic Monsters).[3][4]
Ride mechanics

The Robocoasters feature KUKA robotic arms, the same technology used on Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment. Unlike the stationary robotic arms used in Robocoasters like Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, the technology is used in conjunction with busbar track technology to provide a differing experience.[5]
