Draft:Miniverse (toy)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Miniverse are a USAmerican series of collectable craft kits created by MGA Entertainment. The kits contain materials used to build miniature food or "lifestyle items".[1]

The Miniverse kits come with miniature plastic and liquid resin "ingredients" that once assembled can be set in UV light such as sunlight[2] the UV resin mimics food ingredients such as peanut butter or maple syrup.[1]

The brand has been described as targeting "kidults".[3] and collaborates with Gen Z influencers and food brands to market themselves.[4] In September 2023 they became the best selling toy in the UK.[5]

The first series was first launched in December 2022 in the USA, and a month later in the UK.[6] In August 2023, MGA announced a Make It Mini Lifestyle Edition, including furniture items like plants, candles, and aquariums.[7] After a deal with Warner Brothers, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings sets were released in July 2024.[8] Hello Kitty food items were released in October 2024.[9]

Controversies

[edit]

In 2024, 21million sets of Miniverse "Make It Mini" toys were recalled due to risk of irritant and burns caused by the UV resin in the kits.[10] There was one report of asmtha being triggered by the resin.[11] The resin was revealed to include chemicals prohibited in childrens products the USA by the Federal Hazardous Substances Act, including hydroxyethylmethacrylate and isobornyl acrylate.[12]

In 2024, a "Make It Mini: Happy Hour" with cocktails was released, and was met with calls to be banned from Alcohol Justice. While the toys were described as "21+" (the legal drinking age in the USA) they were sold in toy isles and accused of promoting drinking to children.
