Michigan First Credit Union is a credit union based in Lathrup Village, Michigan..[1]
As a not-for-profit financial institution, Michigan First is owned and operated [2] by its approximately 165,000 members [3]. With assets of $1.5 billion as of April 2025 [3], the credit union operates 33 branch locations in the state of Michigan [4]. Michigan First belongs to the CO-OP Network, which provides members access to over 30,000 surcharge-free ATMs and 5,000 shared branch locations [4]. The organization is a federally insured credit union, regulated by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) [5]. Founded in 1926[6], it is the longest-standing credit union in the state of Michigan [7].

Membership
[edit]Membership is open to all who live, work, or worship anywhere in the state of Michigan[8]. Michigan First was the very first credit union in Michigan to obtain a state-wide charter in 2014 [7]
Michigan First started as Detroit Teachers Credit Union in 1926. Membership was limited to those employed by the Detroit Board of Education.
In 1941, Detroit Teachers Credit Union became the largest teachers’ credit union, and in 1952, grew to be the largest credit union in the world. In 1957, the organization opened its first stand-alone building in Detroit. In 1960, assets reached $25 million – making Detroit Teachers Credit Union the first credit union in the world to achieve this milestone. In 1964, steady growth continued with the opening of two new branch locations.
Over the next two decades, the credit union was on the leading edge of advancements in technology. It was one of the first credit unions to fully embrace computers, and in the years following, added ATMs and Visa/Mastercard programs, and rolled out an audio banking program.
In 2001, the organization rebranded, becoming Michigan First Credit Union. In 2009, Michigan First expanded its charter to include anyone who lives, works, or worships in Macomb, Oakland, or Wayne County. In 2014, it became the first credit union in Michigan with a state-wide charter. Also in 2014, the credit union launched its 365 Live Call Center, which locally services members 24/7, and formed Michigan First Mortgage. The credit union continued its expansion, with the opening of more branches and a merger with Grand Rapids Family Credit Union, which allowed Michigan First to enter the Grand Rapids community. In 2015, the credit union formed a partnership with Kroger, placing Michigan First branches inside select Kroger stores. In 2016, Michigan First celebrated its 90th anniversary and opened Michigan First Insurance Agency. In 2018, the organization established a partnership with Walmart. In 2020, Michigan First reached $1 billion in assets, and in 2022, named Jennifer Borowy as the 7th President and CEO.
