Michael Kraut (born in 1965) is an American Criminal Defense Attorney based in Los Angeles, California who practices in State and Federal courts throughout the United States and appears frequently as a legal commentator for CNN, Good Morning America, KNBC, and CBS news. He served as a Senior Deputy District Attorney in Los Angeles under the Gil Garcetti and Steve Cooley administrations for over 14 years. He was assigned to the elite Hardcore Gang Division which handled gang homicides in Los Angeles. He was then assigned to the White Collar Unit and was responsible for the prosecutions of CEOs and senior management of hospitals.
Michael Kraut first came to nationwide attention when he uncovered the Rampart Scandal at the Los Angeles Police Department. This turned out to be one of the largest police corruption scandals in United States history. He wrote the "Kraut Memo" which detailed his suspicions of police misconduct by Officer Rafael Perez. Perez was later found to have stolen almost one million dollars worth of cocaine from the LAPD evidence locker room and admitted to framing citizens for criminal acts. During his review of files, Mr. Kraut also alerted Senior Management of another instance of Perez's dishonesty. The two warnings were ignored by DA Senior management until Perez was caught stealing 8 pounds of cocaine from the evidence locker at LAPD.[1][2][3][4][5]
In 2008, Mr. Kraut opened Kraut Law Group and has specialized in representing high profile clients charged with White Collar crimes, murder and DUI related crimes. While defending a client, he discovered that Pasadena Police Officer Kevin Okamoto had engaged in hiding evidence and witness tampering. Okamoto was fired from his job as a result of the evidence of his improper police activities.[6][7][8][9][10] Mr. Kraut also handled the murder of four Pepperdine sorority sisters who were killed on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, California in the Fraser Bohm case. The DA alleged that Bohm was driving in excess of 100 MPH when he drove in the parking lane and killed the four young women. Bohm was found to have no record and was not on drugs or alcohol at the time of the accident however he was charged with four counts of murder.[11][12][13]
In another high profile case, Kraut represented a wealthy elderly Catalina business owner that was arrested for failing to pay taxes and overtime to her employees in the Tucey Case. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office arrested the 76 year old woman and her husband in such a manner that the husband died.[14]
Kraut is a frequent legal analyst for Good Morning America, CNN, NBC and CBS news stations.
Kraut grew up in Ithaca, New York and attended Cornell University, where he received a bachelor's degree in science in 1988. He then worked at an investment firm before first attending Case Western Reserve Law School and then transferring and finishing at Harvard Law School in 1993.
He is licensed to practice law in California and Texas as well as all Federal Courts.
