Michael Gale (born 27 October 1962) is an Australian businessman, entrepreneur, and CEO and founder of The Entrepreneurs Group.[1] A former Silicon Valley technology entrepreneur and venture capitalist, he has operated as a principal of numerous financial advisory firms and currently sits on the boards of numerous technology companies. His engagement with startups internationally is extensive and reportedly has involved over 100 startup companies across the United States, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Australia.[2]
Early Life and Education
[edit]The son of prominent academic Fay Gale and nephew of astronomer Colin Stanley Gunn, Gale grew up in Adelaide but would frequently spend periods of time in Oxford, where his mother was a visiting professor at Oxford University.[3] Gale was awarded a scholarship to attend Prince Alfred high school, however he left both home and high school without completion in 1978.
His mother, the first woman pro-vice-chancellor of the University of Adelaide, was described as a feminist and culturalist. Her PHD and later work was principally concerned with Aboriginal communities, and as a result, Michael spent much of his youth living with indigenous communities globally. Gale has cited his upbringing as foundational for his career focused upon cross-cultural communications, subsequently leading to his specialisation in cross-cultural business.[4]
Career
[edit]In 1981, Gale's first daughter was born, leading him to seek employment in sales roles due to his lack of formal education and the financial requirements of the time, whilst owning and operating a small electronics business.[4] The same year, Gale entered the personal computer industry by importing educational software into his native Australia. He was later an executive at Computer Power and then Macromedia prior to its 1993 NASDAQ listing (later acquired by Adobe). Since 1994, he has been variously an angel investor, technology banker and venture capitalist.[5]
As the Chief Executive Officer of the Gramercy Group (2001–2014), Gale directed investment operations focused on arbitrage opportunities between high-growth markets in the United States, Europe, and Asia. The firm specialized in venture investing, leveraging capital from regions such as the Middle East, China, and India to fund innovation-driven companies.[6]
In 1992, Gale cofounded and funded AIMIA (formerly Australian Interactive Media Industry Association), Industry Lobby Group.
Gale is credited with playing a pivotal role in facilitating the globalization of leading companies including Macromedia, HAHT Software, F5, Akamai, Apple, and other high-growth technology ventures.[7][1]
Personal Life
[edit]Gale has had a string of appearances in both writing and television. In 2012, Gale had a minor role as an investor in the Bravo Television reality show Start-Ups: Silicon Valley.[8][9] Gale is a frequent conference speaker and panelist.[10][11] In addition to these appearances, Gale has acted as chairman at Chat the Planet, the creator of Hometown Baghdad.
Gale has been an active board member of Project Rozana since November 2021, a non-profit based in Australia that aims to connect Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank with appropriate medical training and healthcare, and, by extension, build connections between Palestinian and Israeli citizens.[2]
