Medito, officially known as the Medito Foundation (Medito Stichting in Dutch), is a non-profit organisation founded in 2019 and based in Amsterdam. The organisation mainly operates through its free mobile app, which offers guided meditation sessions and meditation courses.[1] It is run by volunteers and is primarily funded by donations.[2][3]
History
[edit]Romain Sourdiaux, Michael Speed, Gareth Yorke, and Steven Yorke founded Medito Foundation in 2019 to offer a free meditation and mindfulness service.[4][3]
The Medito app was launched in April 2020, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.[2] The app quickly gained in popularity, reaching 100,000 downloads in September 2020.[5] It was awarded Google Play's Best of Play Award in the "Apps for Good" category in 2020.[6]
In July 2022, the Medito app reached over a million downloads.[7]
Product
[edit]Medito offers guided meditation and mindfulness sessions, which are developed with the help of two advisory boards: a scientific advisory board, and a diversity and inclusion advisory board.[2][8] It also offers meditations from other organisations, including UCLA, Dhamma talks, and Audio Dhamma.[9]
The organisation primarily offers its services through an app, available on iPhone and Android devices.[10]
The app offers daily meditations, guided meditation for sleep, breathing exercises, and meditation challenges, like 30-day mindfulness challenges.[11]
Research
[edit]The Medito app has been used in several studies on the effects of practising mindfulness and meditation.[12][13] One such study, conducted by researchers from the Universities of Bath and Southampton and published in the British Journal of Health Psychology, examined the impacts of 30-day mindfulness training on psychological health and well-being, using the Medito app.[14] The study found significantly improved well-being and lower depression and anxiety symptoms among the participants who engaged in the mindfulness practise.[15]
