Introduction

[edit]

The Medico-Legal Society of Victoria is an Australian medical and legal organisation founded in 1931.[1] It is notable for being the oldest society of doctors and lawyers in Australia, and for having many prominent judicial, academic and senior professional members and speakers throughout its history. It is one of the world’s oldest continuously running medico-legal societies.[2] Membership of the society is by way of nomination and is open to Australian lawyers and medical practitioners.

The society describes its aims as the promotion of medico-legal knowledge and the fostering of professional and collegiate scholarship and interaction among members of the medical and legal professions.[3]

Established in 1931, the Society was modelled on the British Medico-Legal Society, with which it affiliated in 1932, with Lord Riddell elected an honorary member.[4] The first president was The Hon Sir William Gilbert Stewart McArthur, a judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria.[5]
