MarinChess

[edit]

MarinChess is a Marin-based chess organization that offers after-school programs and chess camps..[1] It is also the largest after-school chess program provider in the Northern Bay Area. Co-founded by Stanley Wong in 2023, MarinChess teaches critical thinking, focus, and strategy through chess. Its mission is to make the game accessible, exciting, and enriching for all students, regardless of experience level. Since its founding, it has already taught and engaged thousands of students in the game of chess.[2]

At present, MarinChess works with the majority of San Francisco Bay Area schools including but not limited to San Rafael City Schools, Ross Valley School District, Novato Unified School District, Santa Rosa City Schools, Petaluma City Schools, Cotati-Rohnert Park Unified School District, and many others[3]

History

[edit]

In 2023, Stanley Wong, a Marin teen resident and alumnus of The Branson School who previously ran its chess club[4], co-founded MarinChess with his friend Henry Lien, a founder of a non-profit chess organization[5]. Together, they worked to follow and continue the footsteps of Lanette and Jeffrey Gordon, a couple who ran after-school chess programs for years in Marin. With the aim to address the educational chess gap left by the couple, MarinChess was created to provide chess opportunities for Marin youth in a fun and inclusive environment.[6]
