The Malta Ridge Volunteer Fire Company (MRVFC) is a fully-volunteer fire protection district that provides fire protection for the municipality of Malta, New York. While the official service area is only 31 square miles, Malta Ridge commonly assists surrounding fire agencies.[1][2]

History

[edit]

MRVFC started in a Malta town meeting in 1948. A discussion regarding the existing fire protection plan for the town was brought up and a proposition for the MRVFC charter was approved by the town board, totaling 68 members. The original members purchased a 1928 American LaFrance Pumper. A utility truck was also donated to the fire company.[3]

Station history

[edit]

The first firehouse was built in 1947. It was a garage for a Packard and Willy Jeep Dealership; a member of the business allowed the fire company to keep their pumper in the back of the show room. The pumper was housed here until the fall of 1949.[4]

The second firehouse was located on the corner of NYS Route 9 and Malta Avenue Extension and was purchased in 1949 from the U.S. Army. It was a Quonset hut that was modified for fire station use. Modifications included the installations of volunteer sirens, a wood stove, a furnace, kitchens and bathrooms, a bay expansion, and a meeting room. This station was used from 1949 until the summer of 1970.[4]

The third firehouse was also located on the corner of NYS Route 9 and Malta Avenue Extension after the second firehouse was moved to the Malta Town garage. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on 21 June 1969. The company moved into the three-bay firehouse in August of 1970.[4]

For the first time, a second firehouse was purchased for the purpose of having a second location for apparatus storage in 1975 ("south station"). A small, two-bay building was purchased on the south side of Dunning Street. Repairs were made to the building and on 12 August 1975, unit 382 (Engine) was relocated to this station.[4]

The second south station was built at 2603 NYS Route 9 and had two bays. It was used from 1979 until 2022 and replaced the previous south station.[4]

The current north firehouse (station 1) was built in 1992 at 5 Hearn Road on the corner of Malta Ave Extension. This station continues to be used today; it is considered the headquarters of the fire company. It has four bays and houses Engine Rescue 381, Engine Tanker 384, Tanker 385, Marine 386, and a utility truck.

The current south firehouse (station 2) was built in 2014 at 8 Hemphill Place. It is a shared station with the Round Lake Volunteer Fire Department, which is part of the non-profit "Fire Companies of Malta" corporation. It has four bays and houses Engine Tanker 382, Forest 383, Tower 388, and a utility truck.[4]

Recent notable incidents

[edit]

On 22 February 2025, MRVFC along with many other fire departments in the area, battled a third-alarm residential structure fire in Stillwater on State Route 76. The call came into the Arvin Hart Fire Company around 9:30pm and the incident was upgraded to a working structure fire upon arrival. An offensive fire strategy was in place for 30 minutes until structure conditions became dangerous, resulting in an evacuation of firefighters and a second alarm. 10-15 minutes later, scene command struck a third alarm. The structure later collapsed. Throughout the call, there were many issues getting water to the scene due to a lack of fire hydrants and cold temperatures. According to radio reports, multiple tanker shuttles had to be performed. Malta Ridge had Tanker 385 and Tower 388 on the scene. The incident lasted around six hours, displacing all residents with no injuries.[6][7][8]
