Maksym Lozovyi (born October 16, 1983, in Kherson Oblast, Ukraine) is a Ukrainian opera and pop singer, known for his performances in both genres. A former sports journalist, Lozovyi switched careers to music, gaining international recognition and performing in Ukraine and Ireland.
Early life and education
[edit]Maksym Lozovyi was born in 1983 in Kherson region, Ukraine. He graduated from a local music school, where he studied the button accordion, and later obtained a degree in music from Kherson State University as a vocalist.[1] He continued to develop his vocal skills through private lessons with Italian vocal coaches Mauro Augustini and Gianluca Terranova.
Career
[edit]After university, Lozovyi worked as a sports journalist and football commentator. He covered matches involving regional teams such as FC Tavriya Simferopol, FC Krystal Kherson, and FC Enerhiya Nova Kakhovka.
In 2016, he returned to music, launching a career as a baritone opera singer. He became a laureate of international competitions in Rimini, Italy, and received a special award at the Muslim Magomayev International Competition in Truskavets, Ukraine.[2]
On June 1, 2019, he co-organized the First Tauride International Opera Music Festival, where opera singers from Ukraine and Europe performed on an open stage on the banks of the Dnipro River accompanied by an orchestra.[3]
In his hometown of Kherson, he gained recognition through creative collaboration with the Arcadia Orchestra of the Kherson School of Culture, conducted by Olena Novakovska and director Mykhailo Vargun. He also performed as a vocal soloist with the Kherson Regional Philharmonic Orchestra .[4] In 2022, during the Russian occupation of Kherson, the Philharmonic's chief conductor Yurii Kerpatenko was shot by Russian forces for refusing to cooperate with them in organizing a concert for Russian Flag Day. After that, Lozovyi was forced to leave his job at the Philharmonic .[5]
International performances
[edit]Following the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Lozovyi relocated to Ireland. He continued his musical career there, performing with the Irish National Opera in productions such as Faust, La Bohème, La Traviata, Rigoletto, The Flying Dutchman, and The Elixir of Love.
As a soloist of the Kerry choral union he gave several Christmas concerts for the residents of County Kerry .[6]
In 2024, Lozovyi made his Irish dramatic debut portraying German officer Kruger in the original Irish musical drama Letters From The Front, written by Don O'Connor and Ollie Hennessey, and presented by Cloud 9 Productions. The show starred West End performer Rebecca Storm.[7]
He also appeared as a soloist with SING SYNC: A Choir for Everyone at the George Bernard Shaw Theatre in Carlow,[8] where he performed a diverse program, including a rendition of the Irish classic Danny Boy.
In October 2024, Lozovyi organized two sold-out charity concerts at the Methodist Church in Carlow, raising nearly €4,000.[9][10] The proceeds were divided between the church's local food pantry and a similar humanitarian initiative in Kherson. These concerts featured a blend of classical and musical theatre repertoire, under the musical direction of Ollie Hennessey.
Also in 2024, he sang the traditional closing song at the world-famous festival-competition Rose of Tralee.
