Mahavatar Cinematic Universe is an Indian animated media franchise and shared cinematic universe based on the avatars of Lord Vishnu. Created by director Ashwin Kumar and produced by Kleem Productions in association with Hombale Films, the franchise reimagines the mythological epics from the Dashavatara through 3D animation and modern cinematic storytelling.[1][2][3][4]

The franchise officially launched with the announcement of Mahavatar Narsimha in June 2025. The first film is scheduled to be released on 25 July 2025.[5][6][7][8][9]

Concept

[edit]

The Mahavatar Cinematic Universe is a 12-year animated franchise that reimagines the ten avatars of Vishnu in a chronological, interconnected format. The aim is to revive and modernize Indian mythology for global audiences, using state-of-the-art 3D animation and culturally rooted storytelling. The films will be released every two years, from 2025 to 2037.[1][2][5][4]

[edit]

As of July 2025, seven films have been announced in the Mahavatar Cinematic Universe. The franchise begins with Narasimha and ends with a two-part finale on Kalki. Each film is based on a different avatar of Vishnu, either individually or thematically.

Mahavatar Narsimha (2025)

[edit]

Diti, one of sage Kashyapa’s wives, surrenders to desire at an inauspicious hour, ignoring his warning that such a union could lead to demonic offspring. Her children, Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu, grow into ruthless demons, trained by Shukracharya to challenge Lord Vishnu. When Hiranyaksha falls to Vishnu’s Varaha Avatar, Hiranyakashipu’s fury deepens, driving him to seek near-immortality through a boon from Brahma. Ironically, his own son Prahlad becomes a devoted follower of Vishnu, igniting a fierce clash of faith and ego between father and son. The tale builds toward the arrival of Narasimha, a being beyond definition, born to navigate the loopholes of divine law and restore cosmic order. But how does one defeat a foe immune to death by man, beast, day, or night? What justice awaits when the rules themselves bend? The answers will be revealed in the main story.

Development

[edit]

Director Ashwin Kumar conceptualized the universe as a long-term mythological epic. The project is produced by Hombale Films, known for successful films like KGF, Kantara, and Salaar, and co-developed by Kleem Productions. Priyanka Das is one of the lead producers. The first film, Mahavatar Narsimha, was publicly announced in mid-2025 and is set to release on 25 July 2025 in multiple Indian languages.[6][5][7]

Cultural Impact

[edit]

The Mahavatar Cinematic Universe has been recognized as a landmark project in Indian animation. It is positioned to become one of India's most ambitious animated sagas, bringing together mythology, animation, and mass storytelling at a scale comparable to global cinematic universes.[8][9]
