Mafatlal Industries Limited
[edit]Mafatlal Industries Limited is an Indian textile manufacturing company headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra. It is part of the Arvind Mafatlal Group and has been a longstanding player in India's cotton and textile sector. The company was established in the early 20th century and became known for producing mill-made cloth for Indian consumers, especially during the pre-independence Swadeshi movement.[1]
History
[edit]Mafatlal Industries was originally promoted by the Mafatlal family, one of India’s oldest industrial families. The company expanded steadily during the 20th century, becoming a prominent name in India's textile production. In the post-liberalization era of the 1990s, the group undertook significant restructuring and consolidation of its textile and petrochemical businesses.[2]
Leadership
[edit]The group was led for several decades by industrialist Arvind N. Mafatlal, who passed away in 2011.[3][4] He was known for navigating the company through various phases of industrial transformation. His son, Hrishikesh A. Mafatlal, has held executive roles in group companies including NOCIL Ltd.[5]
In recent years, Priyavrata Mafatlal has taken on a leadership role within the group and has also authored business articles and books on leadership and governance.[6]
Diversification
[edit]The Arvind Mafatlal Group has expanded beyond textiles into new sectors including education technology, sustainability, and digital learning. In 2023, the group launched and began scaling an ed-tech platform called GetSetLearn, aligned with the Indian government's National Education Policy.[7][8]
The company also continues to invest in smart textiles and sustainable manufacturing practices.[9]
Legacy and Recognition
[edit]In 2024, the Indian government released a commemorative postal stamp in honour of Arvind Mafatlal for his contributions to Indian industry and philanthropy.[10]
