MKM Building Supplies is a UK builders' merchant based in Kingston upon Hull. Founded in 1995, the company currently has 134 branches across the country.[3][4]

History

[edit]
MKM Bridgend

On 12 September 1995, close friends David Kilburn and Peter Murray co-founded MK Building Supplies Ltd.[1][5] The company's name would be altered less than two weeks later to become MKM Building Supplies Ltd, a name which has since remained unchanged.[1] The first business the company made was providing plumbing and heating supplies to caravan manufacturers.[6] Murray sold his company shares in 2006, whilst Kilburn has continued to run MKM to this day.[6] Having grown out of its home in Hull, where the company also opened its first branch,[3] MKM has spread wide across the United Kingdom, predominantly throughout the north of England.[4] In September 2022, the company opened its 100th branch, in Bromsgrove.[7]

On 19 June 2023, it was announced that Kilburn was to be awarded a CBE by King Charles III in his inaugural Birthday Honours list for his services to the construction industry and charity.[8] He would receive the award at an investiture ceremony on 31 January 2024.[9] A few months prior, on 22 November 2023, Kilburn had also received the 'Outstanding Contribution to Business' award at the Yorkshire Post Excellence in Business Awards.[5]

On 20 February 2024, MKM acquired Oceanair UK to help grow into the HVAC market.[10][11][12] The following day, MKM came under criticism after the company had been named by the Department for Business and Trade for not paying staff the minimum wage.[13][14] CEO Kate Tinsley was awarded an OBE on 14 June 2024 for her services to construction and her dedication to promoting diversity within the industry. She was among over 1,000 individuals honoured in the King's Birthday Honours list.[15][16][17] On 8 August 2024, MKM partnered with instant hot water tap brand Wödår, allowing the company to sell their products.[18] On 6 January 2025, MKM elevated their design process by partnering with ArtiCAD.[19]

Throughout February 2025, new branches opened in Plymouth, Bridgend, Bangor, and Cheltenham. The expansion 74 new jobs and brought MKM’s total number of branches to 134.[20][21] Their arrival in Plymouth was also the first builders' merchant in the city for over two decades.[22] The next month it was announced that despite the construction market shrinking, MKM grew their revenue by 6.4% to £986m the previous year.[23][24] On 11 April 2025, MKM began their 'Check Your Tools' campaign to raise awareness for testicular cancer.[25] Soon after, the company appointed its first Chief Operating Officer (COO), Dave Castle.[26][27][28]

Sponsorships

[edit]
MKM Stadium

The company have been associated with the originally named KC Stadium in Hull since its opening in December 2002.[29][30] However, on 25 June 2021, it was announced that MKM had bought the exclusive naming rights for the 25,586 capacity venue,[30] which is home to two of the city's top sports teams.[29] Hull K.R. announced on 1 February 2024 that MKM was to join the club as a platinum partner,[31] becoming the third of Hull's top sports teams to be associated with the company. On 14 August 2024, MKM partnered with the Hull-based Tommy Coyle Foundation, with the aim of improving sporting facilities for young people within the local community.[32]

MKM are also club partners with both Dundee F.C.[33] and Dundee United,[34] having opened a branch in Dundee in February 2020.[35] The company began sponsoring other Scottish football clubs in 2023, namely Arbroath and Dunfermline Athletic.[36][37] A month later, on 9 August 2023, RFL Championship club Barrow Raiders announced that they had agreed a two-year sponsorship deal with MKM.[38] On 20 September 2023, the company then partnered with Wakefield Trinity[39] after opening a Wakefield branch in July 2023.[40] On 20 November 2024, Shrewsbury Town became partners with MKM,[41] following a branch opening locally earlier that year.[42] The company then began sponsoring speedway club Workington Comets ahead of the 2025 season.[43][44]

MKM has also previously sponsored Sheffield F.C. and Carlisle United.[45][46]
