Lucia Janičová is a Slovak mountaineer, scientist, professional drone pilot and mother, who on 12 May 2024 became the first Slovak woman to climb to the summit of Mount Everest (8,848 m).

Biography

Lucia Janičová graduated from Edinburgh Napier University in Edinburgh with a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Immunology and Toxicology (equivalent to the French Licence). She went on to study at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, where she obtained a Master of Research (MRes) in Immunology.

After graduation, she pursued scientific work in immunology for biotechnology companies. Much of her career has been devoted to developing assays for research purposes within translational medicine and preclinical studies.

She is currently working in scientific immunology and is a leader in sustainability in laboratories. As a qualified member of the Health and Safety Committee, she is also developing her passion for toxicology and ecotoxicology.

Mountaineering

Lucia gained her first mountaineering experience on sea cliffs such as Old Man of Stoer and North Stack in traditional and sport climbing, as well as on short rock walls.

She progressed to winter mountaineering, ice climbing and mixed climbing.

Climbing achievements

In preparation for the Mount Everest expedition, she climbed several major peaks:

• Aconcagua (6,961 m) in the Andes,
• Mera Peak (6 476 m) in the Himalayas,
• Mont Blanc (4 807 m) in the Alps,
• Gerlach Peak (2 655 m) in the Tatras,
• Ben Nevis (1 343 m) in the Grampians,
• the main Cullin ridge.

These climbs helped her to gain the necessary experience and fitness to climb the highest mountain in the world.

Climbing Mount Everest

On 12 May 2024 at 7:25 local time, Lucia Janičová reached the summit of Mount Everest, becoming the first Slovak woman to achieve this feat. Symbolically, this happened on Mother's Day.

After the climb, she expressed her joy by saying, "I am extremely tired, but I feel an immense euphoria that I have climbed Mount Everest. I found out by chance that no Slovak woman has ever climbed Everest. My aim is to draw attention to persistent gender inequality and to inspire others that despite past traumas, it is possible to find self-worth and achieve great things in life.”

She made the climb from the Nepalese side via the southern route with the support of the Nepalese Seven Summit Treks team. She acclimatised and completed the ascents with Rinjin Bhote.

Her expedition was supported by the Slovenska sporitelna, which, together with the Nadacia pre deti Slovenska, combined this achievement with a donation appeal for single parents, especially mothers, to support their self-development and ensure a better future for them and their children.

Public Speaking

Lucia Janičová is now an inspirational speaker, sharing her experiences to motivate others to overcome challenges and pursue ambitious goals. Drawing from her own journey, she emphasizes the importance of determination and perseverance in achieving even the most demanding objectives.

Through her talks, she inspires audiences to push past obstacles and strive for personal and professional success.
