The Little Red Hen Coffee Shop is a diner in Altadena, California. It is owned and operated by the Shay family who acquired the location in 1972.^[1]

History

Robert and Rena Shay were a couple living in Jackson, Mississippi when Robert passed away due to tuberculosis.^[2] Due to his passing, Rena moved to California, settling in Pasadena. Rena worked a variety of jobs as a silk finisher for multiple locations. She was a frugal businesswoman and eventually saved enough money to buy her own home and the Little Red Hen Cafe location from its original owners. Together as a family, Rena and her children labored to create a comfortable and welcome environment for their guests. The cafe became a beloved cornerstone of the community, eventually receiving the "Small Business Award" in recognition to their contributions and hard work.^[3]

2025 Eaton Fire

On January 7th, the restaurant was completely destroyed by the Eaton fire. As part of the efforts to restore and rebuild Black-owned businesses, the Fifteen Percent Pledge Gala was held on February 1st. The singer Ciara donated $50,000 to Barbara Shay, the current owner of the Little Red Hen Cafe, to aid in the reconstruction of her family's business.^[4]

Menu and Offerings

The Little Red Hen offered biscuits, roast beef, Salisbury steak, sweet potato pie, and banana splits. The restaurant was known for its southern-style dishes, which attracted a significant population of Altadena residents who originated from the American South. Other notable menu items included oxtails, neck bones, smothered chicken, meatloaf, and catfish.^[2]
