Lindenwood Christian Church is an historic Disciples of Christ church on Union Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee. One of the oldest churches in the city, it has been led by Senior Minister Rev. Geoff Mitchell since 2019.

History

[edit]

Lindenwood Christian Church was originally organized in 1843, though some records show that the congregation initially formed as early as 1837.[1]. The first official church building, then called Linden Avenue Christian Church, was completed in 1859 on the corner of Linden Avenue and Mulberry Street. During the American Civil War, the church was occupied by Union forces to be used as a soldiers' hospital, and it would later be used as a treatment center during yellow fever outbreaks in the late 1800s[2]

In 1953, under then-leader Rev. Howard Thomas Wood, Linden Avenue Christian Church moved to its current location in Midtown Memphis and was renamed Lindenwood Christian Church. The new location would initially include a temporary sanctuary and education building, with a recreational building added in 1962. The permanent sanctuary was completed and dedicated in 1966 and is still in use today.
