Lecco has one of the worst congestion issues in Italy and, by greater extent the whole of Europe It’s main arterial road, the SS36, with it’s tunnel system dug under the city it moves over 100.000 cars a day,[1] a load too big for what the roads where designed for. INRIX estimated that Lecco’s Citizens lost around 60 hours a year due to traffic in that same study they ranked Lecco as the 12th most congested city in Italy, on par with Florence Turin and Naples[2] all cities that have 15 times Lecco’s population [3][4][5][6]
Due to Lecco’s strategic position as a joint between northern vallies like Valltellina and ValChiavenna and big urban centers to the south such as Milan, Bergamo and Como It has a lot of throw-traffic that can’t be moved to others form of transportation, but there is also a significant portion of local traffic, especially in the city center, that can be improve on. Improving car infrastructure isn’t possible in most of the city due to space constraints, and probably wouldn’t even fix the problem of traffic either due to the principle of induced traffic, so the only viable alternative is to reduce car volumes by improving public transit. Something that the currant Gattinoni administration is trying to do by adding bike lanes,[7] [8] rising parking prices[9] and creating a new “Bus Hub”[10] . Even with these improvements public transit in Lecco remains scares and traffic high especially on the SS36 and public trust in Gattinoni's ability to solve the traffic problem is diminishing.
